For WoW Forever Priest leveling, go Shadow: damage over time plus Power Word: Shield keeps you safe, Vampiric Embrace arrives as a 16-point gold talent around level 25, and every Priest now gets Devouring Plague at 20. Forever wands no longer gain damage from spell power, so plan to finish monsters with spells more often than in Classic.

WoW Forever Priest leveling infographic: leveling spec Shadow; Devouring Plague and Fear Ward at level 20 for every race; Vampiric Embrace is a 16-point gold talent lasting 30 seconds with a 1 minute cooldown; Shadow Word: Death baseline at level 32; wands no longer gain damage from spell damage.

Best Priest leveling spec in WoW Forever: Shadow

Blizzard calls the Priest the most versatile healer, but also a vulnerable class: cloth armor and few escapes. Solo, that means you want monsters dead before they reach you, or you want them hitting a shield. Shadow does both. Shadow Word: Pain and Devouring Plague tick while Mind Blast and wand hits finish the job, and Power Word: Shield absorbs what gets through.

Our tier list puts Priest in C tier for solo speed because the early levels are slow. The upside is that a Priest never has trouble finding a group, so mixing questing with dungeon runs is a strong plan from the teens onward.

When to switch: stay Shadow for questing. At level 40 dual spec unlocks, and that is the moment to add Holy or Discipline as a second spec for dungeons. Talents are changed at a class trainer in a major city. Holy Precision now gives up to 18% Holy spell hit, so Blizzard says healers no longer need to gear for hit.

Shadow talent path for leveling

Talents start at level 10. With one point per level, as in Classic, you have 11 points at 20, 16 at 25, 21 at 30 and 31 at 40. The Legacy perk Talented lets later characters unlock talent points up to 5 levels earlier.

Blizzard listed the Forever changes to Shadow rather than the full tree. From those, the leveling order we would follow is:

  1. Shadow Focus (now row 1). It raises Shadow spell hit chance instead of lowering the target's resistance, so fewer resisted Mind Blasts.
  2. Shadow Reach (now row 2, only 2 points), for longer range on Shadow spells.
  3. Mind Flay and the new Improved Mind Flay (row 3), which adds damage and range at the cost of a weaker slow.
  4. Vampiric Embrace, now the 16-point gold talent: 30 seconds with a 1 minute cooldown. Your damage heals you, which cuts drinking and eating between pulls.
  5. Shadow Weaving, which now only helps the Priest who cast it. That is fine solo, since it was always you.
  6. Devouring Contagion (row 5, new). Devouring Plague costs less mana, and when a plagued monster dies the plague jumps to an enemy within 5 yards with its remaining time. Great for packed quest areas.
  7. Early Demise (row 6, new) for more Shadow Word: Death crits below 20% health, and then Shadowform.

Shadowform in Forever lets you cast every non-healing spell, halves the mana cost of Shadow spells and doubles their critical strike damage bonus, with a lower flat Shadow damage bonus. In Classic it took 31 points, which is level 40; Blizzard's post does not give its Forever cost, so we will confirm it at launch. If you want a stronger wand early, Wand Specialization in Discipline now needs only 2 points.

Key Priest spells and class quests by level

Spells marked Classic are carried over from Classic; the others are new Forever levels from Blizzard's deep dive.

  • Level 1: Smite, Lesser Heal and Power Word: Fortitude (Classic).
  • Level 4: Shadow Word: Pain. Level 6: Power Word: Shield (Classic).
  • Level 8: Renew and Fade. Fade now drops twice as much threat (Classic level, Forever change).
  • Level 10: Mind Blast (Classic), your first talent point, and the new Gnome and Human racial spells.
  • Level 12: Inner Fire. Level 14: Psychic Scream (Classic).
  • Level 20: Devouring Plague and Fear Ward for every race, a second racial spell for most races, plus Flash Heal and Holy Fire (Classic).
  • Level 30: Divine Spirit, now baseline. Level 32: Shadow Word: Death, an instant Shadow hit with a 15 second cooldown that costs you 10% of your maximum health if the target survives.
  • Level 40: riding, your first mount and dual spec.

Priests have no big leveling class quest in Classic. In Forever, Blizzard lists racial Priest spells at levels 10 and 20 but does not say whether they come from a trainer or a quest, so check your trainer at both levels.

Leveling a Priest by bracket

1-10. Smite to pull, Shadow Word: Pain, then Smite or melee. Shield before the monster reaches you. Pick up the first wand you can afford or loot; Enchanting can make you one.

10-20. Mind Blast to open, Shadow Word: Pain, wand to finish. Keep mana for a shield and a heal. Let your mana come back between fights instead of drinking after every pull; as in Classic, Spirit regenerates mana when you have not cast for a few seconds.

20-30. Devouring Plague is a big damage spell for every Priest now. Vampiric Embrace at 25 lets you chain pulls. Because wands no longer gain damage from spell power in Forever, a fresh wand upgrade matters more than spell power gear for the finish.

30-40. Shadow Word: Death at 32 is your execute: use it when the monster is low, so the self-damage never triggers. Devouring Contagion makes clustered quest mobs much faster.

40-50 and 50-60. Set up Holy or Discipline as your second spec and run dungeons whenever a group asks for a healer; with dungeon monsters worth about 20% more experience, that is real progress. These levels were not in the beta, so we will update this part after launch.

Forever changes that matter for Priests

  • Wands: Blizzard's September 24 beta notes say wands no longer gain any extra damage from the user's spell damage. Crafted common and uncommon wands also sell to vendors for very little now.
  • New baseline spells: Fear Ward and Devouring Plague at 20 for every race, Divine Spirit at 30 and Shadow Word: Death at 32.
  • Fade removes twice the threat, a real help when you heal a dungeon.
  • Prayer of Healing heals the target's party and their pets, and Renew from several Priests can sit on the same target.
  • Shadowform allows all non-healing spells and halves Shadow spell mana costs.
  • Discipline gains Penance at 21 points, a 2 second channel that damages enemies or heals allies, and Twin Disciplines on row 1 boosts instant spells.
  • Beta fixes: Devouring Plague can now critically strike, and Shadow Weaving can no longer fail to apply.

Races, professions and gear for a leveling Priest

Races: Alliance Priests can be Human, Dwarf, Night Elf or Gnome, which is new in Forever. Horde Priests can be Troll or Undead. Every race has its own racial spells, and several help leveling:

  • Undead, Dark Sacrifice (20): turns your own health into mana over time, scaling with Spirit. Strong for cutting drink breaks.
  • Gnome, Confounding Flash (10): confuses up to 5 nearby enemies for 3 seconds, broken by damage. A rare Priest escape.
  • Night Elf, Starshards: much more damage, now on a 30 second cooldown. Elune's Grace (20) makes attacks miss you.
  • Dwarf, Chastise (20): damages and roots a humanoid for 2 seconds. Human, Divine Grace (10): an instant heal on an ally below 50% health.
  • Troll: Hex of Weakness and Shadowguard are unchanged.

Professions: Tailoring makes cloth gear and bags as you level, and Enchanting makes wands for yourself; see our professions guide. Herbalism is the easy gold option.

Gear and stats: for Shadow, spell damage, Intellect and Stamina, with Spirit for mana between pulls. Forever uses the same hit value for spells and melee, and Shadow Focus covers part of it. Dungeons: you are the healer every group wants; our dungeons guide lists the new ones. Short on time before raids open on December 9? Our WoW Forever powerleveling team levels Priests by hand.

WoW Forever Priest Leveling FAQ

What is the best Priest spec for leveling in WoW Forever?

Shadow. Damage over time, Power Word: Shield and Vampiric Embrace at 16 points make it the safest solo spec. Add Holy or Discipline as a second spec at level 40 for dungeons.

Do wands scale with spell power in WoW Forever?

No. Blizzard's September 24 beta notes say wands no longer gain any extra damage from the user's spell damage. Wand damage now comes from the wand itself, plus Wand Specialization if you take it.

Can Gnomes be Priests in WoW Forever?

Yes, Gnome Priest is one of the new race and class combinations. Gnome Priests get Confounding Flash at 10 and Contingency Plan, a protective ward on an ally, at 20.

When do Priests get Devouring Plague in WoW Forever?

At level 20, and every Priest gets it, not only Undead. Fear Ward is also available to every race at 20.

Is Priest slow to level in WoW Forever?

Solo, the early levels are slow, which is why we rank Priest in C tier. Groups always want a healer, so mixing quests with dungeons speeds it up, and dual spec at 40 makes that easy.
