WoW Forever Professions: Best Picks, Pairs and Gold
What Blizzard has actually confirmed about WoW Forever professions, what is still carried over from Classic Era, and which profession pairs we would pick on day one.
WoW Forever professions keep the familiar Classic lineup but add over 600 new recipes, crafted food with a small XP bonus, campsite objects from skill 20 and Blueprint recipes from dungeon bosses. For most players the best start is a gathering pair for gold while leveling, then a swap or a crafting pair once you know what your raid or PvP group needs.
What Blizzard confirmed about WoW Forever professions
In the Deep Dive panel recap, Blizzard says professions get over 600 new recipes across professions and level ranges, crafted food that can grant a small experience bonus plus stat boosts, and advanced Blueprint recipes that drop from dungeon bosses.
The biggest system change is Camping. The Cooking Fire becomes a Basic Campfire, and placing one creates a campsite with vendors, repairs, profession workspaces and one-hour buffs. A Basic Campfire holds up to three crafted objects, each player contributes one, and those objects share a one-hour cooldown. Cooks can learn upgraded Campfires that hold five or 10 objects.
Every profession has three camp objects learned at different skill levels, with the first available at skill 20. Blizzard's examples include a Sharpening Wheel (Blacksmithing, Attack Power), a Faction Banner (Tailoring, Spirit) and an Alchemy Lab. These buffs do not stack with the class buffs they mirror.

Professions list, skill cap and what changed from Classic
Blizzard has not published a full professions list for Forever, but its posts reference the Classic lineup directly: Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking and Tailoring as crafting professions, Herbalism, Mining and Skinning as gathering, plus Cooking and Fishing. First Aid is not named in Blizzard's articles, but it is active in the beta according to player threads on the official forums. That gives the expected 12.
On the skill cap, the safest statement is this: the Legacy System article rewards reaching 150, 225 and 300 skill in each non-gathering primary profession, so 300 is a real milestone. Blizzard has not written that 300 is the hard cap, and a beta note on Tauren Cultivation even mentions herbs requiring more than 300 Herbalism, so we would not rule out changes later.
Other changes come from beta notes and player reports, so treat them as provisional:
- Official beta notes: skinnable creatures can once again only be skinned a single time, Poor Copper Vein nodes were reduced in starter areas, and crafted common and uncommon wands now vendor for 1 copper.
- Official beta notes: some Blacksmithing and Leatherworking recipes are intended as random dungeon drops.
- Reported by beta testers on the Blizzard forums, not confirmed by Blizzard: Healing Potions moved from Alchemy to First Aid, and Alchemy gained other options such as grenades.
- Not announced: whether Classic specializations (Weaponsmith, Goblin and Gnomish Engineering, Leatherworking schools) return.
Legacy Points: why crafting professions matter more now
This is the change that should shape your plan. Tradeskills is a Legacy Challenge category worth 18 points: one point each time a non-gathering primary profession reaches 150, 225 and 300. Gathering professions do not award these points.
Legacy Points are shared across all alts, but each character spends them in its own trees, and Blizzard says each character can spend up to 16 points at launch. In practice that means every crafting profession you max on any character helps the whole account. One caveat: challenges completed on Normal, PvP or Roleplaying rulesets do not carry into Hardcore, while Hardcore completions do carry out.
The Professions tree has perks worth planning around: Working Overtime raises your chance to gain skill points, Bountiful Harvest finds extra Scarce resources when gathering, Bartering cuts vendor prices, Master Chef and Luremaster add extra cooking and fishing results, and Dedicated Study is a daily cooldown that speeds up skill gains. Blizzard has not published the exact percentages or point costs.
Best WoW Forever professions for leveling, gold, PvE and PvP
Our picks follow Classic Era logic plus what Blizzard announced. Nobody has seen the launch economy yet, so treat them as starting points.
Best profession picks by goal (our recommendations)
| Goal | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Leveling | Herbalism + Mining or Skinning | Gathering as you quest, gold for training and mounts, no detours |
| Early gold | Two gathering professions | Raw materials sell first while everyone levels crafting |
| PvE raiding | Alchemy + Herbalism, or Engineering | Consumables and utility; Alchemy Lab for camps |
| PvP | Engineering + Mining | Grenades and gadgets have been PvP staples in Classic |
| Legacy Points | Two crafting professions per character | Only crafting primaries award Legacy Points |
| Everyone | Cooking + Fishing (+ First Aid) | XP food, stat food and camp upgrades |
For leveling, the XP bonus on crafted food makes Cooking worth more than ever. It does not use a primary slot, and only Cooks can learn the upgraded Campfires, so at least one person in a leveling group should keep it high.
For gold, gathering wins the first weeks. Every new character needs materials to level crafting, and Legacy Points give players a fresh reason to push crafting to 300 on several alts, which should keep material demand high.
For PvE, Alchemy stays the consumables profession, but if the reported Healing Potion move to First Aid makes it to launch, its edge shrinks a bit. Engineering is the PvP and utility pick; Blizzard has not confirmed its Forever recipe list, so we are relying on its Classic role here.
Gathering and crafting pairings that make sense
The natural pairs from Classic still apply, since crafting recipes draw on the same materials:
- Herbalism + Alchemy: self-supplied potions and flasks; Herbalists also get the Incense Candle (Intellect) for camps.
- Mining + Blacksmithing: armor, weapons and the Sharpening Wheel (Attack Power).
- Mining + Engineering: the classic PvP pair; ore and stone feed most early Engineering recipes.
- Skinning + Leatherworking: cheap leveling, plus the Tanning Rack that advanced Leatherworking recipes need.
- Tailoring + Enchanting: no gathering needed; cloth drops from humanoids and you can disenchant your own crafts.
A strong account plan is a gathering main that funds everything, plus alts that each take two crafting professions to 300. Remember that reduced copper nodes in starter zones will make early Mining more crowded on launch week.
How to level WoW Forever professions efficiently
- Train gathering at your first trainer and gather while questing; do not stop to farm until you need a specific material.
- Hit skill 20 early to unlock your first camp object from a camping NPC or your trainer.
- Level Cooking alongside questing so your XP food stays current with your level range.
- Take Working Overtime and use Dedicated Study daily once your Legacy tree allows it.
- Run dungeons with your professions in mind: some recipes and all advanced Blueprints drop from bosses. Our WoW Forever dungeons guide covers the new instances.
In Classic Era, trainer ranks open at 75, 150 and 225 skill with character level requirements. Beta testers report that Cooking can reach 150 before level 10 in Forever, so the gates may be looser; Blizzard has not confirmed either way. If you would rather skip the grind entirely, our WoW Forever profession leveling service takes any of the 12 professions from 1 to 300.
Gold-making angles for launch
- Sell raw materials early. Copper, Linen, Peacebloom and light leather move fast while everyone levels crafting for Legacy Points.
- XP food. Leveling players will want food with an experience bonus; watch for which recipes sell.
- Blueprints. Advanced camp objects come from dungeon boss drops. Blizzard has not said whether those recipes are tradable, so check the item before you plan around selling it.
- Disenchant, don't vendor. Crafted common and uncommon wands vendor for 1 copper in the beta, so Enchanters should disenchant them.
- Tradeskill factions. The Azeroth Commerce Authority and Durotar Supply and Logistics are new tradeskill activity hubs; rewards are not fully published yet.
- Watch BoE transmog. Vendoring a BoE item whose appearance you have not collected now soulbinds it, so list it on the auction house instead if it has value.
Gold also matters for training costs and riding, since Blizzard is moving the up-front mount cost into training. If you need a head start on launch week, see our WoW Forever gold page.

WoW Forever Professions FAQ
How many professions are in WoW Forever?
Expect 12: nine primary and three secondary, the same lineup as Classic. Blizzard's posts mention every one except First Aid, and First Aid is active in the beta according to player reports. Blizzard has not published an official list.
What is the max profession skill in WoW Forever?
Blizzard's Legacy System rewards reaching 300 skill in crafting professions, so 300 is the milestone to plan around, matching Classic. Blizzard has not stated it is a permanent hard cap.
Can you have more than two professions in WoW Forever?
Blizzard has not restated this for Forever. Classic Era allows two primary professions plus Cooking, Fishing and First Aid, and we expect the same until launch shows otherwise.
What is the best profession for making gold in WoW Forever?
At launch, two gathering professions such as Herbalism and Mining or Skinning. Demand for raw materials should be high because crafting professions now award account-wide Legacy Points.
Do gathering professions give Legacy Points?
No. Blizzard says the Tradeskills Legacy Challenges cover non-gathering primary professions only, with one point each at 150, 225 and 300 skill.
What are Blueprints in WoW Forever?
Blueprints are advanced Camping recipes that drop from specific dungeon bosses and let you place stronger campsite objects. Blizzard has not published which bosses drop each one.
