To level a Paladin in WoW Forever, play Retribution with the best two-handed weapon you can find, keep a Seal up and Judge on cooldown, because Judgement no longer consumes your Seal. Holy Strike at level 6 and baseline Consecration at level 20 give the class real tools early, and you stay one of the hardest classes to kill while leveling.

Best Paladin leveling spec: Retribution

Our best class to level tier list puts the Paladin in B tier with Retribution as the spec. You will not kill as fast as a Hunter or Mage, but heavy armor, self heals and a bubble mean you almost never die, and Forever fixes the two old Retribution problems: weak early damage and running out of mana.

For mana, Sanctified Judgement can refund up to 60% of the judged Seal's cost, Benediction now cuts the cost of all instant spells and abilities by up to 10% and Holy Conduit lowers the cost of Consecration, Holy Wrath and Exorcism by up to 40%. For damage, Sacred Arbiter at 16 points adds 20% to Holy Strike and Vengeance stacks up to 9% damage for 30 seconds. Pursuit of Justice now gives 15% movement speed, a big quality of life talent between quests.

Protection is the alternative if you plan to tank. Seal of Fury at level 10 makes your Judgement taunt and wraps you in small absorb shields, and Consecration hits the first four enemies hard. Holy is a strong single-target healer for dungeon groups, but it is slow solo.

When to switch: at level 40, when dual spec opens. Keep Retribution for questing and add Protection or Holy for dungeons. Talent changes, including Legacy talents, are done at a class trainer in a major city.

Paladin talent path: confirmed gold talents

Talents start at level 10, so you reach 11, 16, 21 and 31 points at about levels 20, 25, 30 and 40. Blizzard has published every Paladin milestone except the Retribution 11-point slot.

Suggested Retribution order: Benediction, then Conviction and Holy Conduit on row 2, Sanctified Judgement and Pursuit of Justice on row 3, Sacred Arbiter at 16 and Vengeance (it needs Sanctified Judgement). Repentance comes at 21. On row 6, Instrument of Law makes Hammer of Wrath instant, and Champion of the Light turns part of your Intellect into spell damage; it was cut to 10/20/30% of Intellect in the October 16 beta notes. Finish with Twist of Light at 31.

The redesigned Vindication lowers the target's Attack Power and raises yours by up to 3% for 30 seconds, so it pays off on every fight while leveling.

Key Paladin abilities and class quests

  • Confirmed for Forever: Holy Strike at 6 (instant Holy damage based on your weapon, 10 second cooldown in the beta), Seal of Fury at 10, baseline Consecration at 20 and Lay on Hands on a 20 minute cooldown.
  • Carried over from Classic: Seal of Righteousness and Devotion Aura at 1, Judgement and Blessing of Might at 4, Divine Protection at 6, Hammer of Justice at 8, Exorcism and Flash of Light at 20, Divine Shield at 34, plate armor at 40 and Hammer of Wrath at 44.
  • Class quests: in Classic, Paladins learn Redemption from a class quest at level 12, and Alliance Paladins can run a quest chain from about level 20 for the two-handed mace Verigan's Fist. Blizzard has not said these changed, and it has not published quests for the new Undead Paladins.

Paladin mounts are an open question. In Classic, Paladins got a class mount at 40, but Forever moved the riding cost into training and grants the mount when you learn the skill. Check our riding and mounts guide after launch.

1-10: Put on Seal of Righteousness, Judge as you close in and keep the Seal up. Since Judgement no longer consumes the Seal, you no longer spend a global cooldown recasting it after each Judgement. Use Holy Strike on cooldown from level 6.

10-20: Spend points in Retribution and replace your weapon every chance you get; Paladin damage still lives on the weapon. The new Hall of Thanes (13-18) and Ruins of Lordaeron (15-20) dungeons, using beta level ranges, are good weapon stops.

20-30: Consecration at 20 is the big jump. Pull two monsters, drop Consecration and fight inside it; it deals its full damage to the first four enemies that enter. Exorcism and Flash of Light arrive at the same level. Rest when mana runs out and use Holy Light between pulls.

30-40: Repentance at 21 points gives you a way to take one monster out of a bad pull. Divine Shield at 34 and the shorter Lay on Hands mean almost every mistake is survivable. Save gold for riding at 40.

40-60: Train plate, set dual spec and take Twist of Light. Paladins are strongest against Undead and Demons, so the Plaguelands at the end of the 50s suit you well.

Forever changes that affect Paladins

  • Judgement keeps your Seal: the biggest change for leveling. Seal twisting is no longer baseline and returns as the Twist of Light talent.
  • Holy Strike at level 6: an instant Holy weapon strike; its cooldown was lowered from 12 to 10 seconds in the beta.
  • Consecration for everyone at 20: no longer a Holy talent, and tuned to hit the first four enemies hard and the rest lightly.
  • Seal of Fury at 10: a flat Holy bonus on every swing that favors fast weapons, a small absorb shield and a taunting Judgement with a 10 yard range. Rank 3 moved to level 26 in the beta.
  • Lay on Hands: cooldown cut to 20 minutes from 1 hour.
  • Baseline buffs: Blessing of Kings, Improved Blessing of Wisdom and Lasting Judgement are now baseline. Fire, Frost and Shadow Resistance Auras reach all raid members within 30 yards.
  • Salvation: no longer counts as a Blessing, so it stacks with your other Blessing, and you learn Revoke with it (October 16 beta notes).
  • Unified hit and crit: Blizzard names Retribution as a hybrid that gains from shared hit and crit values.
  • Undead Paladins: a new combination, and Cannibalize now restores mana as well as health. Human and Dwarf remain the Alliance options.
  • Still missing: Blizzard says Paladins have no interrupt and cannot slow targets, so runners stay a nuisance.

Professions, gear and dungeon role

Professions: Mining with Blacksmithing helps you craft or upgrade weapons, which matter more for a Paladin than almost any other class. Mining with Herbalism earns the most gold for riding. First Aid is less vital because you heal yourself, but bandages save mana. See our professions guide.

Stat priority while leveling (Classic logic, not a Blizzard list): a slow, hard-hitting two-hander first, then Strength, Stamina, crit and Intellect. Intellect is worth a little more than in Classic because Champion of the Light turns part of it into spell damage.

Dungeons: every group is happy to see a Paladin. Protection tanks with Seal of Fury, Consecration and Templar's Bulwark, Holy heals single targets very well, and Retribution brings Blessings and auras. Clear each dungeon once with its quests; our dungeons guide has the level ranges.
