WoW Forever Rulesets Guide: Normal, PvP, RP & Presets

WoW Forever replaces realms with rulesets. Here is what Normal, PvP, Roleplay, Roleplay-PvP and Hardcore mean, how presets work and which choice fits you.

WoW Forever has no realm list. Instead you pick a ruleset, a large shared world with its own PvP rules: Normal, PvP, Roleplay and Roleplay-PvP are open on November 4, and Hardcore comes after launch. Before that you choose an Experience Preset, Classic or Enhanced, which sets your models, UI and quest helpers. Most players should start on Normal with the Enhanced preset, but PvP fans and roleplayers have good reasons to pick otherwise.

How rulesets replace realms

Blizzard calls it a realmless Azeroth. Rather than hundreds of servers, each ruleset works as one broad player ecosystem in your region, so you are not stuck on a dead realm and there is no realm list to scroll through. You pick the ruleset at first login, right after the Experience Preset.

The trade-off is a hard wall between rulesets. You can only group, join a guild, run dungeons and raid with players on the same ruleset, and Horde and Alliance still cannot group at all. Choosing a ruleset is really choosing who you can play with, so settle it with your friends and guild before November 4.

Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets, so an alt on another ruleset still benefits from the Legacy perks you earned. Hardcore is the exception, covered below.

Every WoW Forever ruleset explained

Blizzard announced Roleplay-PvP after the other rulesets, adding it for launch on November 4. Battlegrounds such as the new Battle for the Darkspear Islands are separate from world PvP; our PvP guide covers honor and battlegrounds.

Which ruleset should you choose?

  • Choose Normal if you are new, if you mainly want to level and raid, or if you care about the most efficient path to 60 before raids open on December 9. Blizzard itself suggests Normal as the starting point for new players.
  • Choose PvP if ganks, world fights and defending quest hubs are part of the fun for you. Expect slower leveling in contested zones, and level in a group when you can.
  • Choose Roleplay if you want in-character play and names that fit the world. Read the naming rules before you claim a name.
  • Choose Roleplay-PvP if you want both, and if your RP guild has agreed on it.
  • Wait for Hardcore only if you specifically want permadeath. You can start on another ruleset now and make a Hardcore character when it opens.

One more factor is time. Raids open on December 9, about five weeks after launch. On PvP and Roleplay-PvP, being camped in a contested zone costs leveling time, so a guild that wants to raid on day one may prefer Normal and use battlegrounds for PvP. If your group is split, go where the people you raid with are. Blizzard has not announced transfers between rulesets for living characters, so treat the choice as permanent for now.

Hardcore: what Blizzard has confirmed

Hardcore is coming sometime after launch, and our launch guide places it in winter on Blizzard's roadmap. What we know about how it works:

  • It is a fully enclosed ecosystem: progress from other rulesets never flows into Hardcore.
  • If a Hardcore character dies, it can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP.
  • Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide everywhere except Hardcore, so do not expect perks earned elsewhere to carry in.
  • Blizzard has not published the Hardcore rule details, such as how dungeons or PvP deaths are handled.

Classic vs Enhanced Experience Preset

At first login you pick an Experience Preset before the ruleset. It only sets defaults; you can change each option later under Game Menu, Options.

Blizzard recommends Enhanced if you are unsure. We agree for most players: quest objective markers save real time while leveling. Pick Classic if you want the original look and feel, and remember that you can turn single features back on later.

Choosing Classic starts you with transmog disabled, but you still collect appearances, so you lose nothing if you change your mind. You can configure or disable transmog at a transmogrifier in certain cities.

Names, models and early reservation

  • Two-part names: every character has a main name and a secondary name, and the full name is unique within your region. You can hide the secondary name under Options, Nameplates, My Secondary Name, but it still shows in chat.
  • Early Name Reservation: owners of the Skyborne Heroic Pack, Epic Pack or Warcraft Forever Collection can reserve names from October 27 through November 3. It opened October 27 at 1:00 p.m. PDT in North America and 18:00 CET in Europe, and October 28 at 07:00 local time in Korea and Taiwan.
  • HD or SD models: chosen per character, they change appearance only, and you can switch in Options or at a barbershop.
  • Controls: Windows or Mac with keyboard and mouse, with controller support listed as beta in Blizzard's starter guide.

Because a full name only has to be unique within your region, the two-part system leaves far more room for the name you actually want than a single crowded realm did. Blizzard says this was the point of the change. On Roleplay and Roleplay-PvP, check that both parts fit the naming rules, since those rulesets enforce stricter conventions.

What to settle before November 4

  1. Agree on a ruleset and a faction with your friends and guild.
  2. Pick a preset. If in doubt, Enhanced.
  3. Choose a race and class. Our best class to level tier list ranks all nine for solo leveling.
  4. Plan your first profession pair with the professions guide.
  5. Be ready at 3:00 p.m. PST on November 4, which is 23:00 UTC and midnight CET going into November 5.

From there the WoW Forever leveling guide takes you from 1 to 60.

WoW Forever rulesets FAQ

Does WoW Forever have realms?

No. You choose a ruleset instead, such as Normal or PvP. Each ruleset is a large shared world for your region rather than a single realm.

Can I play with friends on a different ruleset?

No. Grouping, guilds, dungeons and raids only work with players on the same ruleset and the same faction.

Is there an RP-PvP ruleset in WoW Forever?

Yes. Blizzard added Roleplay-PvP for launch on November 4, alongside Normal, PvP and Roleplay.

Is Hardcore available at launch?

No. Hardcore arrives sometime after launch. When it does, a Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset, but progress never flows into Hardcore.

Should I choose the Classic or Enhanced preset?

Blizzard recommends Enhanced if you are unsure. It turns on HD models, quest markers, one-bag and transmog. Every setting can be changed later in the Options menu.
