Destiny 2 Armor 3.0 Guide: Stats, Tiers & Sets

Choose Destiny 2 Armor 3.0 for your build. Compare 12 archetypes, gear tiers, set bonuses, Masterworking and tuning before investing in a new piece.

Game:Destiny 2GuidesPublished: By CFNBoost
Three distinct Guardian armor sets arranged in a futuristic armory, clear chest and helmet silhouettes with luminous modular upgrades, no UI labels.

Armor 3.0 gives you several choices to balance: the stats your build needs, the set effect you want and the quality of each piece. Start with the abilities and weapons you actually use, then compare armor against that plan.

Reviewed October 14, 2026. This guide combines the released Armor 3.0 framework with the current twelve archetypes. It replaces the old universal “Resilience first” advice with a practical way to choose equipment for your build.

Start with the Current Armor Stats

What to look for in your stat tooltips

StatMain area to inspect
HealthOrb healing, flinch resistance and higher-investment shield benefits.
MeleeMelee recharge and higher-investment damage.
GrenadeGrenade recharge and higher-investment damage.
SuperEnergy gained and higher-investment Super damage.
ClassClass-ability recharge and higher-investment Overshield.
WeaponsWeapon performance and ammo support.

The system scales with individual points, up to 200 in a stat. Benefits differ between the first 100 points and the investment above 100. Read the current tooltip for the effect you want instead of assuming an old ten-point breakpoint or stat name still applies. Official current stat guide.

Bungie’s current FAQ also connects the Weapons stat with Special and Heavy ammo generation. Super investment improves energy gained rather than reducing its base cooldown. Current ammo-system explanation. Released Super-stat distinction.

Choose a main goal before distributing points. A grenade-focused setup and a weapon-focused setup need different support. Ask which part of your play is failing: an ability is unavailable, limited ammo runs out or the setup struggles to keep you alive. That answer is more useful than chasing one universal stat total.

The first six pairings come from Bungie’s Armor 3.0 framework. Update 9.7.0 adds the other six and makes all twelve available from Armor 3.0 sources. An archetype identifies the two leading stats; compare the actual roll before choosing a piece. Original archetype framework. Released archetype additions.

Armorer Ghost mods now give roughly a one-in-two chance of the selected archetype, according to Update 9.7.0. This favors a pairing; it does not guarantee the set, gear tier or complete roll you want. Released Ghost-mod change.

Use the pairings to narrow your search. If you want Grenade with Class support, look at that pairing before investing in a piece whose secondary stat serves a different plan. You can combine different archetypes across your equipped armor rather than forcing every piece into the same pattern.

Gear Tier, Power and Masterwork Are Different

Legendary Armor 3.0 framework

Gear tierBase stat totalTier feature
152–57Base tier
258–63Higher stat range
364–69Higher stat range
470–7511 mod energy
57511 mod energy and a tuned-stat slot

These are Bungie’s published Legendary tier ranges before Masterworking. Tier 5 has a 30/25/20 primary/secondary/tertiary distribution. Gear tier describes item quality; Power is a separate progression number. Official Legendary tier framework.

Compare the piece’s contribution to the full loadout. A higher tier gives you more room to work, but check whether the stats and set effect support your goal. Do not replace a useful combination solely because another item has a more impressive label.

For character Power progression, use the Power Level Guide. Increasing that number and improving your armor build are related preparation tasks with different reward decisions.

Choose a Two-Piece or Four-Piece Set Plan

Set effects unlock with two or four pieces from the same set. You can use four pieces of one set or combine two pairs. Read the activation condition before deciding which arrangement suits your abilities and weapons. Official set-bonus guidance.

Start with the Exotic you want to use, then see how the remaining pieces fit the set plan. A bonus that requires an action you rarely perform will not help as often as its description might suggest. Choose an effect you can activate during the activity you actually play.

Try one arrangement in a manageable run and notice when its bonus activates. If the effect fits naturally, improve that arrangement. If it constantly asks you to interrupt your normal play, consider another set before spending more materials.

Masterwork the Piece You Intend to Keep

For Armor 3.0, Masterworking has five levels and adds +1 per level to the piece’s three lowest stats, up to +5 each. Armor 3.0 already drops with full base mod energy; Masterworking increases stats rather than unlocking ordinary mod energy. Released Masterwork rules.

Bungie’s economy explanation separates upgrade costs by gear tier. Inspect the cost on your actual item before each confirmation; an old recipe for a different tier or armor generation is not a reliable spending plan. Official tier-dependent cost framework.

  1. Choose the armor combination you want to use.
  2. Check the piece’s actual stats, tier and set effect.
  3. Try its mods and play a manageable activity.
  4. Read the next upgrade’s cost and resulting benefit.
  5. Invest further when the piece still serves the intended setup.

Keep the Masterwork level separate from gear tier. Completing five upgrade steps is not the same as turning a lower-tier drop into a Tier 5 item. Read what the selected operation changes before treating it as a different upgrade path.

Tuning and Mods: Refine the Full Setup

Bungie’s Tier 5 framework includes a tuned-stat socket. Its options shift five points from another stat into the tuned stat, or use Balanced Tuning to add one point to the three lowest stats. Check how the option changes your equipped totals. Official tuning framework.

Armor mods offer general stat support and slot-specific effects. Read their conditions together with your subclass and Exotic. A mod that depends on an action your setup does not perform is a poor use of space, even when it appears in someone else’s build. Official armor-mod overview.

Old Armor and Exotic Pieces

Bungie’s current returning-player FAQ treats old gear as a useful starting point while newer tiered equipment adds options. Keep a working setup while comparing replacements rather than discarding it all before you have something usable. Official returning-player guidance.

The Armor 3.0 launch distinguishes legacy Armor 2.0 from new armor and describes special handling for Exotic class items. Do not apply the Legendary tier table or every new-armor upgrade rule to every old or Exotic piece. Inspect the specific item’s available options. Released legacy and Exotic distinctions.

When the Exotic is central to your build, evaluate the surrounding armor with it equipped. A comparison made without that centerpiece can leave you with a final setup that misses the goal you planned for.

Where to Look for Better Armor

Update 9.7.0 refreshes pre-Edge of Fate raids and dungeons with tiered armor and set bonuses. Featured standard raids can award Tier 5 armor, and featured standard dungeons list Tier 5 weapons and armor. Check the current featured activity and reward conditions before choosing a farming route. Released raid and dungeon rewards.

The raid and dungeon rotation guide explains the distinction between featured and non-featured runs. For a named dungeon, read the Prophecy guide before planning repeated clears.

Choose a source for the set you want and a difficulty you can complete consistently. A clear gives an opportunity for relevant rewards; it does not guarantee your chosen archetype, slot and roll arrive together.

Compare a New Piece Before Spending

A practical keep-or-replace check

CheckQuestion to answer
Build goalDoes this piece support the abilities and weapons I use?
Equipped totalsWhat changes when I replace the current piece?
Set effectDoes the swap preserve the bonus I planned?
Mod spaceCan I fit the effects the setup needs?
Upgrade investmentAm I likely to keep this piece after testing it?

Make one change, test it and inspect the result. If a stat total improves but the setup feels worse, check what the swap removed. A useful comparison considers the whole build instead of only the new item’s total.

Armor 3.0 FAQ

Stats, upgrades and set choices

Should every build follow the old Resilience-first rule?

Choose from the current stat system and inspect its effects. Start with the abilities, weapons and survival problem your setup needs to support.

Are there still only six armor archetypes?

The released update expands the list to twelve. Use the pairing table to find a primary and secondary stat combination that fits your plan.

Does an Armorer Ghost mod guarantee the exact piece I want?

It favors the selected archetype. It does not guarantee a particular set, slot, tier or full roll.

Do I need to Masterwork new armor before trying mods?

Armor 3.0 arrives with its base mod energy available. Try a usable setup before deciding whether to invest further in that piece.

Does Masterworking turn a lower-tier item into Tier 5?

Keep Masterwork progress and gear tier separate. Read the actual upgrade effect rather than treating one operation as every upgrade path.

Is four pieces of one set always the right choice?

Compare the effect you can activate with the alternatives. One four-piece arrangement or two pairs can suit different builds.

Should I dismantle my old armor immediately?

Keep a working setup while comparing new pieces. Test the replacement with your Exotic, mods and set plan before abandoning equipment you still use.

Does the coaching card guarantee a perfect armor roll?

No. Its published timed advice sessions discuss build and loadout choices, with Self-play included in the session price.
