Destiny 2 Power Level Guide: Progression to 550
Plan Destiny 2 Power progression to 550. Learn which rewards can advance your stage, how Ops grades help and what to check when progress stalls.
Increasing Power in Destiny 2 starts with choosing rewards that improve your character at its current stage. A familiar activity can still be enjoyable without being the right leveling route. Check what it offers before spending a whole session repeating it.
Reviewed October 14, 2026. This guide replaces the old 450 target with the released 550 cap and a practical reward-checking route. Choose a manageable activity, aim for a strong result and inspect what actually drops.
The Current Power Cap Is 550
Bungie’s Monument of Triumph FAQ confirms that the maximum remains 550. It describes 300+ natural drops as the catch-up route for freshly returning Guardians instead of a catch-up chest. It also explains that Powerful gear now broadly means a reward that raises Power. Current official Power FAQ.
For a fresh or returning character, start with accessible content and inspect early rewards. If you are still learning the menus and your abilities, follow the New Player Guide before choosing a difficult farming session.
Understand Which Number You Are Improving
Separate your progression goals
| Number or property | What to check |
|---|---|
| Character Power | Your overall progression, rather than one isolated item. |
| Item Power | How the new piece compares with equipment for that slot. |
| Gear tier and traits | The quality and options of the item you want to use. |
| Guardian Rank | A separate progression goal with its own objectives. |
Bungie’s menu guide distinguishes each gear piece’s individual Power from your combined character Power and describes Guardian Rank as a separate progression system. Use the Character screen to inspect equipment rather than treating every progression number as interchangeable. Official menu and Power explanation.
Weapons and armor also have gear tiers that affect their properties. Read the item details alongside its Power. A higher-Power replacement and a better roll for your loadout answer different questions. Official equipment and tier guide.
Choose Rewards That Can Still Move You Forward
A useful route by your current stage
| Stage | Focus |
|---|---|
| Early catch-up | Collect accessible rewards and establish a usable loadout. |
| Below 400 | Compare ordinary rewards with Ops results rather than repeating by habit. |
| 400 to 550 | Prioritize rewards that keep providing positive Power progression. |
| At the cap | Choose rolls, tiers, collections or activity goals instead of another Power target. |
Released Update 9.7.0 allows A grades or higher in Ops to continue positive Power progression to 550. Higher grades give larger bonuses, and reward Power is no longer capped by the difficulty setting. Released Ops progression rules.
The same release gives miscellaneous older-content rewards a chance of +1 Power up to 400; above that they drop near, but below, your current Power. Legacy vendor purchases likewise drop near but below your Power. Released ordinary-reward and vendor distinction.
If your session keeps producing rewards that cannot advance your current stage, change the goal or source. Farming a specific weapon is a valid project, but call it that rather than expecting it to behave like a leveling session.
Find Ops in the Current Director
Update 9.7.0 retires the Portal screen and moves Ops to Director Destinations. Raids and Dungeons have their own entry there. Released navigation changes.
Choose the exact activity and inspect its launch settings. Read difficulty, matchmaking, modifiers and reward information together. A guide for the old Portal layout may still contain useful activity names, but follow the current menu rather than searching for a retired screen.
Aim for a Grade You Can Repeat
Bungie’s activities guide explains that modifiers affect difficulty and reward scoring, with a preview available before launch. Select a combination you understand rather than adding every available challenge. Official customization and reward-preview guidance.
A harder setting is useful when you can still complete the objective effectively. If it turns a comfortable run into repeated restarts, adjust the setup or reduce a modifier. Compare the result you achieve with the result you hoped to achieve.
- Read the reward preview before launching.
- Choose settings you can handle with your current loadout.
- Finish the objective and inspect the achieved grade.
- Compare the new items with your existing equipment.
- Repeat a productive run, or change one setting if the result falls short.
Do not treat a good grade as a promise that every reward fills the particular slot you want. Judge the route across your session and keep useful pieces. This guide does not supply a measured fastest mission or an exact number of runs to the cap.
Check the Reward Before Dismantling It
When a reward appears, read its slot, Power and traits. Decide separately whether it helps progression and whether you want to use the roll. Avoid clearing several new pieces before you have compared them with the equipment they might replace.
Bungie’s current FAQ says older equipment can be a useful returning-player starting point while newer tiered gear adds options. Keep a weapon you enjoy long enough to understand the replacement instead of discarding it solely because a new piece looks more current. Official returning-player equipment guidance.
If you are evaluating a crafted weapon, the Weapon Crafting Guide separates Pattern progress, weapon level and gear-tier improvements. Working on a Pattern is not the same task as raising character Power.
Infusion: Keep a Roll You Want to Use
Bungie describes Infusion as raising an item’s Power by consuming another piece of the same type, through item details. The donor is consumed and the action cannot be undone. Its older help-page cap examples are historical, not today’s target. Official Infusion operation.
Choose the item you want to keep first, inspect the available donor and read the current cost before confirming. Do not sacrifice a useful roll simply because it has the higher number. Bungie’s current FAQ confirms Legendary Shards and Planetary Materials are no longer required for Infusion. Current material correction.
Keep Inventory and Rewards Under Control
Some engrams must be opened at the Cryptarch. Bungie’s inventory guide warns that the Postmaster has limited storage, so collect and decrypt rewards before overflow becomes a problem. Official engram and inventory guidance.
Make room before a longer session and review unclaimed rewards when you return to the Tower. Check the material cost on an item before upgrading it. Focus investment on equipment you actually plan to use instead of spending on every temporary replacement.
Attunement in Inventory lets you favor a chosen weapon from a supported activity pool, without a cost to change the selection. It improves that weapon’s drop chance; it does not select a missing armor slot or promise a specific roll. Official Attunement explanation.
When Progress Seems Stuck
Troubleshoot the result you actually received
| What you notice | What to review |
|---|---|
| Rewards below your current Power | Whether that source still advances your current stage. |
| Runs end below your intended grade | Settings, objective execution and the result screen. |
| The same slot receives several rewards | Whether another piece still needs improvement; keep checking rather than assuming a complete set. |
| A strong item feels weak in play | Its traits, your abilities and the activity requirements. |
| Rewards are hard to find | Inventory, unopened engrams and unclaimed deliveries. |
Start with one explanation you can check. Raising the difficulty, changing the build and switching activities all at once makes it harder to tell which change helped. Keep the run objective clear and compare the next result with the previous one.
Move into a Specific Endgame Goal
Choose the activity you want to play after leveling and prepare for its actual requirements. The raid and dungeon rotation guide helps you target a named run instead of treating every endgame completion as the same reward source.
Power is one part of preparation. Learn the objective, equip a loadout you understand and agree on your group role. A higher number does not explain encounter mechanics or replace communication.
Choose Help That Matches Your Goal
CFNBoost’s Destiny 2 coaching offers one-, two- and three-hour build and loadout advice sessions with Self-play included. Use those sessions for equipment questions and a setup discussion; they are not sold as a guaranteed 550-Power completion package.

Power Level FAQ
Caps, rewards and progression choices
Is 450 still the final Power target?
The current official FAQ puts the cap at 550. Treat 450 as an intermediate stage rather than the end of progression.
Do I need to find an old catch-up chest?
Bungie’s current returning-player guidance uses natural 300+ drops. Start with accessible content and inspect the rewards you receive.
Why do I keep getting items below my Power?
Review the source and your current stage. A source useful for a particular weapon or another reward may no longer serve your leveling goal.
Should I always choose the hardest available setting?
Choose a run you can complete effectively and review the grade you actually earn. Change one setting at a time if your results fall short.
Does a good grade guarantee the exact slot I need?
Do not assume every reward fills your missing slot. Inspect the drops and compare the route across a session rather than judging it only by one duplicate.
Does Attunement choose an armor slot for me?
Attunement favors a selected weapon from a supported pool. It is not an armor-slot selector or a guarantee of a specific roll.
Is gear tier the same as item Power?
They describe different properties. Compare the item’s Power, tier and traits against the goal you want it to serve.
Does the coaching card sell a completed 550 target?
No. Its published timed advice sessions discuss your build and loadout, with Self-play included in the session price.
