Destiny 2 Vexcalibur Guide: Avalon, Refits & Overshields

Find Avalon, understand Vexcalibur crafting and intrinsic upgrades, compare its three Refits and learn the guard, melee and Void overshield loop.

Game:Destiny 2GuidesPublished: By CFNBoost
A Vex- exotic glaive with emerald triangular energy blade across a luminous geometric data network, armored hand for scale.

Vexcalibur is a craftable Void Exotic Glaive from Avalon. Its identity is a shield-and-melee loop: block incoming damage to build Void overshields, then use melee defeats while protected to refresh that protection. Its three Refit choices support different parts of the loop.

Reviewed October 14, 2026. This guide covers current mission navigation, the crafting recipe and practical weapon use. Start with the present Avalon entry and reward conditions rather than assuming an old seasonal quest or weekly Rotator schedule still applies.

Find Avalon in the Current Activity Menus

Bungie Help lists NODE.OVRD.AVALON among available Exotic missions and classifies them as Pinnacle Ops. Look for the named Avalon entry in the Director’s Ops area, then inspect its access requirements and selected rewards before launching. Current Exotic mission guidance.

Released Update 9.7.0 retires the old Exotic Rotator in favor of Pinnacle Ops versions. It also moves Avalon’s Data Collection buff to the top of the HUD. Use the current interface for the run instead of following an old Rotator calendar. Released mission and interface changes.

Bungie’s historical explanation identifies Vexcalibur as Avalon’s Exotic prize. That establishes the weapon’s source; it is not a current difficulty table or a requirement to repeat the original EDZ discovery puzzle before every run. Bungie’s Avalon and Vexcalibur introduction.

Choose the Unlock You Actually Need

Three different progression goals

GoalWhat it providesWhere to confirm it
Weapon PatternThe permission to Shape Vexcalibur.Pattern progress and the Relic’s crafting menu.
M1R Distribution Matrix upgradesFurther intrinsic recipe options. The intrinsic slot when reshaping the crafted weapon.
Refit unlocksAlternative extra effects for the weapon. The separate Refit slot in the recipe.

Owning the first weapon copy is not the same as having every crafting option unlocked. Check your Pattern, intrinsic tier and available Refits individually before choosing another mission objective.

Obtain and Craft Vexcalibur

  1. Find the current Avalon mission entry and check that you can launch it.
  2. Choose a run whose listed reward matches the weapon objective you need.
  3. Complete the mission and inspect the weapon or upgrade awarded.
  4. Resolve available Deepsight progress and confirm the Vexcalibur Pattern.
  5. Visit the Enclave’s Relic and choose Shape for your first crafted copy.
  6. Check the crafted weapon before planning intrinsic or Refit upgrades.

The current recipe explicitly produces Vexcalibur and has a Pattern-unlocked requirement. If you already have the Pattern, use that existing progress instead of treating every session as a new weapon acquisition. Current crafting recipe.

Use the Weapon Crafting Guide for the difference between Pattern progress, Shape and Reshape. Check the actual recipe’s available options rather than buying materials or repeating a run on an assumption.

Upgrade M1R Distribution Matrix Separately

The current crafting recipe contains the base M1R Distribution Matrix plus its II, III and IV versions. This is the intrinsic slot; the Refit choices occupy another slot. An unlocked Refit does not by itself establish that the highest intrinsic tier is available. Current intrinsic recipe options.

For an upgrade session, record the options you have, choose the mission’s matching upgrade objective and compare the recipe after claiming the reward. Apply the available intrinsic when reshaping the copy you intend to use.

Current reward eligibility should determine the run you select. This guide does not promise that every customized difficulty gives the same upgrade, or turn the original seasonal chest route into a mandatory current checklist.

Compare the Three Vexcalibur Refits

Immovable Refit, Robber Refit and Feedback Refit are alternatives in one recipe slot. Choose the effect that matches your actions; unlocking all three does not mean all three operate at once. Current Refit recipe and descriptions.

Refit conditions and uses

RefitCurrent effectWhat to practice
Immovable RefitRanged damage grants increased weapon energy while stationary with the shield raised.Maintain the required position and guard state while using ranged attacks.
Robber RefitMelee final blows or charged-melee damage reload the magazine from reserves.Connect the melee action to an actual magazine refill, with reserve ammo available.
Feedback RefitBlocking damage partially reloads the weapon from reserves.Block incoming damage and watch the magazine change.

Robber and Feedback reload from reserves; their descriptions do not promise free ammunition. Immovable has a stationary-and-shield condition rather than rewarding every ordinary shot. Keep those conditions in mind when comparing the options.

As an original starting choice, consider Feedback for a block-focused loop, Robber for frequent melee actions or Immovable when stationary guarded ranged attacks fit the encounter. Test the condition you can maintain comfortably rather than copying a universal “best” label.

Build the Guard and Overshield Loop

M1R Distribution Matrix fires a spread and supplies a quick-draining shield. Blocking damage gradually gives Void overshields to you and nearby allies. Perpetual Loophole improves melee damage while an overshield protects you and refreshes that overshield on qualifying melee final blows. Current weapon and intrinsic definitions.

Released Update 8.2.0 adds another part to the loop: triggering Perpetual Loophole also fills Glaive energy. It increases the overshield application rate while guarding and makes melee attacks briefly disorient non-boss Vex. Released Vexcalibur changes.

  1. Choose a position where blocking incoming damage is useful.
  2. Watch the available Glaive energy rather than holding the shield indefinitely.
  3. Block damage and confirm that the overshield is active.
  4. Move to a suitable target and secure a melee final blow while protected.
  5. Check the refreshed overshield and energy before repeating the loop.

This loop depends on an active overshield and a qualifying melee defeat. If the target survives, or the protection ends first, do not assume the same refresh occurred. Reposition when the fight no longer gives you a sensible blocking or melee opportunity.

Match the Weapon to the Encounter

Situations to compare

SituationLoadout decision
Nearby allies can use protectionChoose a guard position that keeps the group within the useful area.
Weak targets are available for melee defeatsLook for opportunities to refresh the active overshield.
A distant target requires sustained damageUse the rest of the loadout rather than forcing a melee loop.
Movement or incoming damage breaks the setupPrioritize a workable position before trying another activation.

The weapon’s guard, ranged fire and melee each serve a different immediate job. Practice changing between them in manageable content. Vexcalibur does not replace a complete ammo plan, a boss-damage option or the actual mission mechanics.

Use the Armor Mods Guide when adding an Orb, ammo or ability plan. Read the condition on each mod: do not assume every Glaive action counts as the same weapon or ability event.

Prepare an Avalon Run Around Its Objective

For a first clear, choose manageable settings and agree how the group will handle the mission’s objectives before pursuing a higher reward. Watch the Data Collection information on the current HUD and the active encounter instructions while you play.

After the run, inspect the actual weapon, Pattern or recipe option awarded. An activity-completion screen alone does not tell you that every intrinsic and Catalyst choice has been unlocked. Check the intended result before arranging another session.

Seasonal gear is a separate reward goal: Update 9.7.0 places former Rotator seasonal rewards behind the Classic Collector modifier on Pinnacle Ops versions. Keep that gear choice separate from the Vexcalibur objective you are pursuing. Released legacy-reward change.

Vexcalibur FAQ

Avalon, crafting and the shield loop

Which mission gives Vexcalibur?

Vexcalibur comes from Avalon. Use the current named mission entry in Pinnacle Ops and inspect your account access and selected weapon reward before launching.

Should I use an old Exotic Rotator calendar?

Released Update 9.7.0 retires the Rotator in favor of Pinnacle Ops versions. Use the current activity menus and reward conditions.

Are the intrinsic and Refit unlocks the same?

No. M1R Distribution Matrix progression is in the intrinsic slot, while Immovable, Robber and Feedback are choices in a separate Refit slot.

Can I activate all three Refits together?

They are alternatives in one recipe slot. Select the unlocked Refit you intend to use and check it on the reshaped weapon.

Do Robber and Feedback generate free ammunition?

Their current descriptions reload from reserves. Keep reserve ammo available instead of treating those effects as unlimited ammunition generation.

What refreshes the overshield through Perpetual Loophole?

Secure a melee final blow while protected by an active overshield. Released Update 8.2.0 also makes triggering the perk fill Glaive energy.

Does guarding help nearby teammates?

M1R Distribution Matrix gradually grants Void overshields to you and nearby allies when you block damage. Position the group so the nearby support is useful.

Does the linked coaching card include unlocking Vexcalibur?

It covers timed build and loadout advice with Self-play included. The current catalogue does not publish a named Vexcalibur weapon or Catalyst package.
