Destiny 2 Ice Breaker Guide: Acquisition, Ammo & Catalyst

Get Ice Breaker through Vesper’s Host, check five drop boosts, plan Rogue Network and Catalyst progression, and understand No Backpack and ignition triggers.

A long heavy white-and-orange futuristic sniper rifle with vents and a glowing energy core, frost and warm exhaust in an orbital hangar.

Ice Breaker is an Exotic Solar Sniper Rifle that uses Special ammo and comes from Vesper’s Host. Weapon acquisition, the dungeon’s puzzle progression and the Catalyst are different goals. Start by deciding which result you need before planning your next run.

Reviewed October 15, 2026. This guide covers current acquisition planning, the five initial-drop boosts, Rogue Network and Catalyst preparation, and the weapon’s ammo and ignition conditions. It also explains the scope of CFNBoost’s published weapon-acquisition package.

Get Ice Breaker Through Vesper’s Host

The current weapon collection lists Vesper’s Host as Ice Breaker’s source. Bungie Help lists the dungeon among available activities; use the current Raids and Dungeons entry and inspect your account’s access and selected settings. Current weapon source. Available dungeon guidance.

Dungeon access still depends on the corresponding expansion or Dungeon Key. Check the launch screen before arranging a session; the current Collection includes Dungeon Keys, while keys can also be acquired separately. Current raid and dungeon access guidance.

The Vesper’s Host Guide covers the encounter route and team roles. A full dungeon clear and an Ice Breaker acquisition objective are separate purchases and separate results to verify.

Plan Repeat Attempts Without an Old Weekly Lockout

Released Update 9.1.0.2 removed the weekly lockout on Exotic weapon rewards in legacy raid and dungeon activities. Those weapons can drop again when their source encounter is completed. Vesper’s Host is an older dungeon, so the launch-era “one chance per character per week” rule is not the current basis for planning Ice Breaker attempts. Released legacy Exotic reward change.

That change provides another chance, not a guaranteed drop after a fixed number of clears. Keep an acquisition session separate from the dungeon’s ordinary featured gear and weekly challenge rewards.

  1. Check that Vesper’s Host is accessible on the intended Guardian.
  2. Choose whether the session is a first clear or a repeat acquisition attempt.
  3. Prepare the team for the source encounter and agree how long to play.
  4. Complete the eligible encounter and inspect the actual reward.
  5. If the weapon is still missing, review progress and plan another eligible attempt.
  6. After a drop, inspect the weapon before moving to Catalyst work.

Use the Raid and Dungeon Rotation Guide when you also want to plan featured gear. A rotation bonus for ordinary loot does not establish a guaranteed Ice Breaker reward.

Check the Five Initial-Drop Triumph Boosts

Five current Triumphs award the effect that increases Ice Breaker’s initial drop rate. Read and claim the named reward when earned. None of these descriptions promises a specific percentage or a guaranteed next drop. Current Triumph rewards.

Ice Breaker initial-drop boosts

TriumphCurrent requirementPreparation decision
StationmasterComplete Vesper’s Host on Master difficulty.Plan a separate difficulty objective if ready.
Alone in the DarkComplete all encounters solo without leaving the activity.Learn the full route before attempting it alone.
Flawless NetworkingComplete all encounters without dying or leaving.Choose a group plan that prioritizes recovery and survival.
Perfect SolitudeComplete all encounters solo, without dying or leaving.Treat it as a distinct high-demand attempt.
Buried SecretsUnlock station access and discover its past.Follow the dungeon’s recorded secret progression.

Choose achievable objectives rather than assuming you must finish a solo flawless run before the weapon can drop. The boost rewards improve the initial-drop pursuit; they are not a substitute for the eligible encounter reward.

Keep Rogue Network and Catalyst Progress Separate

The current Rogue Network chain starts with a dungeon completion, then an outer-hull beacon and Hawthorne visits. It moves through station secrets and the first- and second-level BrayTech storage modules. Follow the active quest stage instead of skipping to another player’s completed checkpoint. Current Rogue Network quest chain.

  1. Complete Vesper’s Host on any difficulty for the first tracked step.
  2. Locate the beacon on the station’s outer hull, then return to Hawthorne.
  3. Follow the agents’ information and access the first-level storage module with its token.
  4. Uncover the next station secrets and acquire the quest reward.
  5. Return to Hawthorne for the next update.
  6. Use the key at the second-level BrayTech storage module and finish the Hawthorne handoff.

Access Override records further secret progression and armor focusing at the second-level module. Director Access records opening Dr. Bray’s final lock. Inspect those Triumphs and your current quest progress when planning the puzzle route. Current station access Triumphs.

The Catalyst’s current source record identifies solving Clovis’s secret in Vesper’s Host. Obtaining Ice Breaker is different from unlocking station access or receiving its Catalyst. Check the weapon and each upgrade state separately. Current Catalyst source record.

For an optional recorded puzzle explanation, Datto’s October 14, 2024 Ice Breaker Catalyst walkthrough has chapters beginning at 0:00 for the answer route, 7:22 for the additional steps and 10:03 for the explanation. It is an attributed launch-period player recording, not a new CFNBoost or PRO gameplay clear.

Use the recording alongside your current quest and Triumph state. This guide does not certify every launch-era panel position or code as unchanged, and it does not provide a universal code to paste into every instance.

Bungie’s released December 2024 update fixed a specific case where the Catalyst was not awarded to players who died during the run. That correction does not make every historical Catalyst report a current universal fault. Released Catalyst reward correction.

Complete the Catalyst and Use Icing-Breaker

The current Catalyst completion objective requires 500 target defeats. Acquire the upgrade, inspect its tracked progress, use Ice Breaker for the objective and confirm that the finished Catalyst is applied. Current Catalyst objective.

Its attached effect is Icing-Breaker: a hit on a slowed or frozen target has a chance to return the round to the magazine. A qualifying hit does not need to be a final blow, and a chance is not a guaranteed refund on every shot. Current Icing-Breaker effect.

  1. Confirm that the Catalyst has been acquired.
  2. Inspect the 500-defeat objective and its current progress.
  3. Complete the tracked weapon defeats.
  4. Apply the completed upgrade and check the weapon socket.
  5. Compare hits on slowed or frozen targets with ordinary targets.

Understand No Backpack in Destiny 2

No Backpack gives final blows or assists with another weapon or ability a chance to create ammo for Ice Breaker. Defeating powerful combatants creates multiple rounds. The described condition is participation in those defeats, not simply waiting for a timer. Current No Backpack description.

Build a practical loop around a comfortable second weapon and your abilities. Use those for suitable enemies, watch the Sniper’s ammo, then switch back when you have a useful shot. This is a starting plan to test, not a promise of uninterrupted ammunition.

Separate the weapon’s qualifying actions

ActionEffect describedWhat not to assume
Final blow or assist with another weapon or abilityA chance to create Ice Breaker ammo.Idle time alone reproduces that condition.
Defeat a target with Ice BreakerThe target explodes.Every ordinary hit is an ignition.
Precision final blow or shatter a frozen targetAn ignition replaces the ordinary explosion.Any body-shot hit into a normal enemy qualifies.
With Catalyst, hit a slowed or frozen targetA chance to return the round to the magazine.A refund is guaranteed on every qualifying hit.

The Armor Mods Guide helps you plan ability and ammo support. Check the specific condition for your chosen effects rather than assuming every Solar or Stasis interaction produces the same result.

Use Explosions and Ignitions Deliberately

The Ice Breaker weapon trait makes defeated targets explode. Precision final blows or shattering a frozen target instead trigger an ignition. The weapon remains Solar; a frozen-target interaction does not change its damage type to Stasis. Current weapon and trait definitions.

For an original comparison, try an ordinary weapon defeat, then a precision defeat and a frozen-target shatter in a manageable activity. Observe the different effects while keeping your range and target type consistent.

Released Update 9.7.0 corrected erroneous ignitions on stunned Barrier Champions. Do not plan around that former behavior as if it were the normal trigger. Follow the actual precision-final-blow or frozen-shatter condition. Released Barrier interaction correction.

Choose the Correct CFNBoost Ice Breaker Package

In Destiny 2 Exotic Weapons & Catalysts, select “Ice Breaker · Weapon acquisition.” The published objective is obtaining the weapon on one Guardian, rather than a standard dungeon clear. It excludes the Catalyst and unlisted puzzle or quest work.

Exotic weapon acquisition packages

Ice Breaker supports Piloted and Self-play. With Self-play, you control your Guardian and join the team; it adds 20% to the normal Piloted base. PC, PlayStation and Xbox share that base. Select the named objective and review its instant total in your preferred display currency.

The collection card shows a starting price for the wider Exotic service. Review the configured Ice Breaker total for this purchase. A random-drop acquisition can take repeated eligible completions; priority choices do not guarantee a first-clear drop or a fixed deadline.
