Destiny 2 Ergo Sum Guide: Quest, Rolls & Catalyst
Get Ergo Sum through Destined Heroes, compare its five frames and eight Exotic traits, check repeat-drop sources and complete the Excision Catalyst upgrade.
Ergo Sum is an Exotic Sword that uses Special ammo. Destined Heroes leads to your first copy; repeat drops let you compare random frames and Exotic traits. Its Catalyst is a separate upgrade with an Excision reward route and its own completion objective.
Reviewed October 14, 2026. This guide follows the current quest and weapon definitions, distinguishes repeat-drop chances from guaranteed rewards, and explains what CFNBoost’s published single-random-roll package includes.
Start with The Final Shape and Destined Heroes
Bungie Help places The Final Shape campaign in the Pale Heart, accessible from the World tab, and lists Destined Heroes among its Exotic quests. Complete the campaign progression that opens the quest, then follow its tracked objectives in the Lost City. Bungie’s expansion progression guidance.
The current Destined Heroes definition has nine ordered stages and identifies Ergo Sum as its weapon reward. The chain includes both Queens missions, conversations in the Lost City, and two Light-and-Darkness quests before the Dyadic Prism handoff. Current quest steps and reward.
Complete the Destined Heroes Quest Steps
- Listen to the strange Hive-frequency transmission at the old Tower in the Lost City.
- Investigate the Lucent Hive portal and complete Queens, Part I.
- Contact Micah-10 through the conduit in the Arbor of Light.
- Speak with Cayde-6 in the Lost City.
- Check in with Ghost on the old Tower ledge.
- Collect Lost in the Light and Found in the Dark from Ghost, then complete both quests.
- Investigate the Taken energy in the Refraction and complete Queens, Part II.
- Return to Ghost in the Lost City.
- Use the Dyadic Prism to reach the Sacrarium landing zone and claim the quest reward.
These are the ordered objectives in the current quest definition. Track the active stage rather than replaying a completed step because an older walkthrough starts there. The two companion quests are required objectives within the chain, not substitutes for completing Destined Heroes.
After claiming the Sword, inspect its frame, Exotic trait and ammo type. Keep that first roll while deciding which repeat drops are worth pursuing. If you are still learning the expansion flow, the Destiny 2 New Player Guide explains where campaign progression fits into your wider route.
Get Additional Ergo Sum Rolls
Bungie Help’s July 2026 clarification describes Pale Heart Pathfinder as a separate Sword source and says its first two completions should award one. It describes Overthrow/Escalation encounter rewards as occasional Exotic Sword or class-item drops, rather than an Ergo Sum for every Matchmade Overthrow clear. Bungie Help’s reward clarification.
Check the Pathfinder reward currently displayed and finish its linked objectives when the Sword reward is available. For repeated Overthrow runs, plan around a possible drop. A clear without Ergo Sum does not establish a guaranteed-drop bug.
- Confirm that you have completed Destined Heroes on the character used for the planned package.
- Inspect the current Pale Heart Pathfinder reward and remaining objectives.
- Complete the eligible path or choose Overthrow for additional drop opportunities.
- Check the actual frame and trait on each new Sword.
- Keep a useful existing roll until a replacement meets your chosen goal.
A random drop does not let you select a particular frame and Exotic trait in advance. Separate “obtain another copy” from “find my preferred combination” when estimating how much farming to do.
Compare the Five Sword Frames
The current weapon has five frame choices in its randomized plug pool. The frame changes how its heavy attack works, while the Exotic trait adds a separate behavior. Read both on the actual roll. Current randomized frame pool.
Ergo Sum frame choices
| Frame | Heavy-attack behavior | Original comparison advice |
|---|---|---|
| Wave Sword Frame | A shockwave uppercut launches you, with an immediate homing follow-up swing. | Practice the follow-up input before comparing a single heavy attack. |
| Caster Frame | Launches a projectile; full Sword energy improves the heavy attack. | Compare ranged engagement with your close-range alternatives. |
| Aggressive Frame | Emphasizes powerful heavy swings and a slam. | Check whether the slam fits the target and your movement plan. |
| Vortex Frame | Uses a spinning heavy attack, improved with full energy. | Check where the spin places you and how many targets it reaches. |
| Lightweight Frame | Combines faster movement with a dashing heavy attack. | Try the dash when mobility matters to your chosen activity. |
Use the same activity, target type and starting energy for a practical comparison. Otherwise, an empty-energy attack or a different enemy can make two rolls appear more different than their frames alone explain.
Understand the Eight Exotic Traits
Ergo Sum’s current randomized Exotic-trait pool contains eight choices. These are the named conditions to look for, not a ranking that promises one roll is best for every build. Current randomized traits and conditions.
Ergo Sum Exotic trait conditions
| Trait | What activates or changes | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Gathering Light | Final blows build stacks that improve guarding and lunge; stowing consumes stacks for ability energy. | Build stacks before testing the stow benefit. |
| Stormbringer | Rapid final blows create a lightning storm at the target. | Compare clustered enemies with isolated fights. |
| Unplanned Reprieve | A powered heavy attack creates projectiles that detonate with delayed Void damage. | Allow the delayed effect to occur before comparing the result. |
| The Perfect Fifth | Every fifth hit produces a delayed Solar explosion that scorches. | Keep track of hits rather than expecting the effect from every swing. |
| Wolfpack Rounds | Powered heavy attacks let nearby Sword wielders create tracking missiles with their attacks. | Coordinate the Sword team and check who receives the effect. |
| Sacred Flame | Powered heavy attacks mark nearby enemies; marked enemies explode on death or when hit by a light attack. | Apply the mark before attempting the light-attack detonation. |
| Insectoid Robot Grenades | Defeated enemies create small robots that seek targets and explode. | Observe what the robots can reach after a qualifying defeat. |
| Arc Conductor | Powered heavy attacks grant a charged state with Arc resistance and nearby chained lightning. | Watch the active state rather than assuming it is always present. |
For an original starting comparison, try Arc Conductor when you want to observe a close-range charged-state loop, Gathering Light when ability recovery matters, or Wolfpack Rounds when coordinating Sword attacks with teammates. These are choices to test against your available rolls and activity.
Wolfpack Rounds on Ergo Sum is a Sword-team interaction. The Gjallarhorn Guide covers the separate Rocket Launcher context. Do not assume similarly named traits support the same weapon families or every Exotic weapon.
Use Transcendent Duelist Deliberately
Transcendent Duelist is Ergo Sum’s shared perk. Its current description reduces the ammo collected, lets final blows accelerate Light and Darkness mastery, increases damage while Transcendent, and extends Transcendence through target defeats. Current shared perk.
As a practice loop, begin with a manageable group, watch the Transcendence meters after Sword final blows, then compare the weapon’s behavior while Transcendent. The intrinsic describes qualifying actions; it does not mean an ordinary hit always extends the state.
Keep a workable ammo plan before relying on the Sword for an entire activity. The Armor Mods Guide explains how to think about ammo support and effect conditions alongside your loadout.
Obtain the Ergo Sum Catalyst from Excision
Bungie’s June 18, 2026 update states that Grandmaster Excision rewards the Ergo Sum Catalyst and explicitly adds that it can also drop on Normal. Normal is a chance-based alternative, not a guaranteed reward from each completion. Bungie’s Catalyst reward explanation.
Keep each acquisition goal separate
| Goal | Route or requirement | Result to verify |
|---|---|---|
| First Sword | Complete Destined Heroes. | Your first Ergo Sum copy and its actual roll. |
| Additional random rolls | Eligible Pathfinder rewards or occasional Overthrow drops. | A new copy, without a selected-roll guarantee. |
| Catalyst acquisition | Grandmaster Excision reward route; Normal also has a drop chance. | The Catalyst has been acquired. |
| Catalyst completion | The current objective requires 500 target defeats. | Completed progress and the applied upgrade. |
The June community challenge accompanying that announcement has ended. Its dated emblem goal is not part of the ordinary Catalyst requirements described here.
Complete the Catalyst and Use Transcendent Steel
The current Catalyst objective is 500 target defeats. Inspect its progress after acquisition, complete the weapon’s tracked objective, and confirm the finished upgrade on the copy you intend to use. Current Catalyst objective.
The attached effect is Transcendent Steel: dealing damage with a Transcendent grenade grants Ergo Sum ammo. It requires damage from that grenade state; simply equipping Prismatic or throwing a regular grenade does not match the described condition. Current Catalyst effect.
- Confirm that the Catalyst is acquired and its objective is available.
- Use Ergo Sum for the tracked defeats and check progress.
- Complete the objective and confirm the upgrade is applied.
- Become Transcendent and damage a suitable target with your Transcendent grenade.
- Observe the Sword’s ammo after that qualifying damage.
Compare your ammo loop with and without the completed upgrade in the same activity. This guide does not assign an unverified ammo amount, refresh interval or universal damage ranking to the effect.
Choose the Correct CFNBoost Ergo Sum Package
In Destiny 2 Exotic Weapons & Catalysts, choose “Ergo Sum · One random roll · Quest already completed.” This published selection is for one random copy after Destined Heroes has been completed. It does not include completing the first quest, selecting a frame or trait, or obtaining and finishing the Catalyst.
Exotic weapon packages
Destiny 2 Exotic Weapons & Catalysts
- Named Exotic acquisition routes
- Separate Catalyst objectives
- Activity-specific participation
The Ergo Sum selection currently offers Piloted completion, with Normal, Express and Super Express choices. PC, PlayStation and Xbox use the same base price. Choose the exact package before reviewing its instant total in your preferred display currency; the collection card’s starting price covers the wider Exotic service.
For help comparing rolls you already own, Destiny 2 coaching has timed build and loadout advice with Self-play included. That is a separate advice session, not a selected-roll or Catalyst package.
Ergo Sum FAQ
Quest, random rolls and Catalyst questions
Which quest gives the first Ergo Sum?
Destined Heroes. Its current ordered chain includes Queens Parts I and II, Lost in the Light, Found in the Dark and the final Dyadic Prism trip to the Sacrarium.
Does Ergo Sum use Heavy ammo?
The current weapon definition classifies it as a Special-ammo Sword. Plan your ammo support around that weapon type.
Does every Matchmade Overthrow clear drop Ergo Sum?
Bungie Help describes occasional encounter drops, not an Ergo Sum on every clear. Pale Heart Pathfinder is a separate reward source to inspect.
How many frames and Exotic traits can roll?
The current randomized pools contain five frames and eight Exotic traits. Inspect the actual combination on the drop you receive.
Can the Catalyst drop on Normal Excision?
Yes. Bungie’s June 2026 explanation says it has a chance on Normal as well as describing the Grandmaster reward route. A Normal clear is not a guaranteed Catalyst.
What is the Catalyst completion objective?
The current objective requires 500 target defeats. Check the tracked weapon progress and confirm the completed upgrade is applied.
What does Transcendent Steel do?
Damage from a Transcendent grenade grants Ergo Sum ammo. The described condition is qualifying grenade damage, rather than merely casting a regular grenade.
Does the CFNBoost package include my chosen roll and the Catalyst?
The published Ergo Sum selection covers one random roll after Destined Heroes is complete. It excludes first-quest completion, selected frame or trait, and Catalyst acquisition or completion.
