Destiny 2 Gjallarhorn Guide: Quest, Catalyst & Rocket Teams
Learn how to get Gjallarhorn, follow And Out Fly the Wolves, plan its Catalyst route and understand Pack Hunter for a coordinated Destiny 2 rocket team.
Gjallarhorn is a Solar Exotic Rocket Launcher with a useful fireteam role: its Pack Hunter perk shares Wolfpack Rounds with nearby teammates using non-Exotic Rocket Launchers. This guide separates the weapon quest, the Catalyst route and the decision to use it in a group.
Reviewed October 14, 2026. Acquisition steps and upgrade progress were checked against Bungie’s current definitions. The visual Catalyst route comes from an attributed player recording; this is an editorial guide, not a CFNBoost gameplay clear or a measured damage ranking.
Choose Your Next Gjallarhorn Goal
Weapon, Catalyst and loadout goals
| Your starting point | Next objective | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| You do not own the weapon | Complete And Out Fly the Wolves. | The separate Catalyst route. |
| You own the weapon, but not its Catalyst | Plan the Catalyst chest route in Grasp of Avarice. | The upgrade defeat requirement. |
| You have an unfinished Catalyst | Complete its progress and apply the upgrade. | A coordinated team damage plan. |
| The upgraded weapon is ready | Decide whether your group is using non-Exotic rockets. | An encounter-specific loadout decision. |
Check your quest log and weapon before organizing a run. Knowing which objective remains helps you avoid repeating a completed step or treating a normal dungeon clear as every Gjallarhorn objective at once.
Check Access and Start the Quest
Bungie’s 30th Anniversary Pack includes Grasp of Avarice and Gjallarhorn. Dares of Eternity is separately described as a free six-player activity. Being able to enter Dares does not establish that your account can launch the paid dungeon. Bungie’s 30th Anniversary access guide.
Bungie’s current new-player path lists And Out Fly The Wolves under the 30th Anniversary content in Eternity. Visit Xûr’s Treasure Hoard, look for that quest and follow its direction to Shaw Han in the Cosmodrome. Current content and quest path.
Track the quest on the Guardian you intend to use. If it is already in progress, continue the objective displayed in your quest log instead of starting the whole route again. Confirm the dungeon is launchable before bringing the group together.
Complete And Out Fly the Wolves
The following sequence paraphrases the ordered quest steps in Bungie’s current item and objective definitions. The seven-round collection count and Exodus Garden 2A objective were checked separately. Bungie’s current Destiny manifest.
- Follow the introductory direction to Shaw Han in the Cosmodrome.
- Complete Grasp of Avarice while on its quest objective.
- Return the recovered component to Shaw Han.
- Collect seven Wolfpack Rounds from powerful Fallen in the Cosmodrome.
- Return to Shaw Han, then visit Banshee-44 in the Tower.
- Complete the Exodus Garden 2A Lost Sector for the remaining component.
- Use the tool chest in the hideout at Shaw Han’s camp to assemble the parts.
- Speak to Shaw Han again to finish the weapon quest.
After the dungeon, the quest continues. Check for the vendor and assembly steps before assuming that the completion screen was the final weapon handoff. Keep the next objective tracked while moving between locations.
For a first dungeon clear, agree who will explain each encounter and allow time for the full activity. Prepare a comfortable ordinary-combat loadout as well as the group’s boss-damage plan. The Destiny 2 New Player Guide covers the basic equipment and activity choices.
Plan the Catalyst Chest Route
Unlock the weapon before arranging a separate Catalyst run. VoteforShifu’s December 2021 recording demonstrates three Reaver Vandal/chest stops in Grasp of Avarice. It is useful visual route evidence, rather than a new current-client recording from CFNBoost. Watch the original route demonstration.
Three stops shown in the recording
| Stop | Route cue | Recording position |
|---|---|---|
| First chest | Cave section: damage the Reaver, collect its Burden by Riches drop and reach the shown chest. | 0:13–0:40 |
| Second chest | After the boulder-stair section: collect the next Reaver drop, follow the route and turn right to the chest alcove. | 0:47–1:18 |
| Third chest | After Fallen Shield: use the cannon route to the final Reaver, then reach the chest on the lower central dome. | 1:36–2:15 |
Learn each route before collecting the temporary buff. For the last stop, the recording completes Fallen Shield before opening the final chest. Verify the Catalyst reward on your own character before leaving; another teammate’s reward is not your confirmation.
Plan these stops from the beginning of the run. Do not assume a boss checkpoint includes earlier chest progress. If the live activity differs from the recorded route, inspect the current Catalyst entry and the actual encounter before continuing.
Complete and Apply the Catalyst
Bungie’s current Catalyst objective requires 400 targets defeated using Gjallarhorn. Finding the Catalyst and finishing that objective are separate stages. Check its progress, complete the requirement and apply the available upgrade in the weapon screen. Current objective definitions through Bungie’s manifest.
The current More Wolves perk increases the magazine and creates an additional stronger, faster micro-missile when Wolfpack Rounds secure a final blow. Its final-blow condition matters: obtaining the Catalyst alone is not evidence that every rocket hit triggers that extra missile. Current perk definitions through Bungie’s manifest.
Choose an activity you can clear comfortably with enough targets and usable Heavy ammo. Watch the Catalyst counter during the session so you know the chosen defeats are advancing it. This guide does not promise a completion time or prescribe a particular temporary farming exploit.
Use Pack Hunter with a Rocket Team
Pack Hunter improves handling and reload near allies; firing Gjallarhorn grants nearby allies Wolfpack Rounds when they wield non-Exotic Rocket Launchers. Its own Wolfpack Rounds split into tracking micro-missiles. Current Gjallarhorn weapon description.
Build the group around the actual perk
| Group setup | Decision to make |
|---|---|
| Teammates are using non-Exotic Rocket Launchers | Consider a Gjallarhorn user to supply the shared rocket effect. |
| Teammates are using other Exotic launchers | Do not assume Pack Hunter grants those weapons Wolfpack Rounds. |
| The group is using precision weapons or another damage plan | Reconsider whether this rocket-support role fits the phase. |
| The encounter forces the group to spread out | Plan where teammates can receive the nearby effect. |
For an original starting plan, choose who supplies Gjallarhorn, agree on the remaining weapons and settle on a firing position before the phase starts. A coordinated support role is more useful than each player choosing a heavy weapon in isolation.
- Check the team’s actual Rocket Launcher choices.
- Choose a position with a clear shot and nearby teammates.
- Begin the planned phase with Gjallarhorn’s shot.
- Let teammates follow the agreed damage sequence.
- Adjust after the phase if movement, positioning or ammo disrupted the plan.
Bungie’s historical tuning explanation identifies a deliberate move toward rocket support. Use that to understand the weapon’s role, not as a current numerical DPS table. Choosing one support user is an editorial starting suggestion, not a rule that solves every boss. Bungie’s explanation of the support direction.
Avoid the Common Mix-Ups
The quest’s collectible Wolfpack Rounds are progression items; the weapon’s Wolfpack Rounds are a combat effect. The shared name does not make quest collection the same action as activating Pack Hunter.
A Catalyst route is different from ordinary dungeon loot farming. Use the Raid and Dungeon Rotation Guide for current weekly reward planning, and keep the named Gjallarhorn objective separate from that schedule.
Gjallarhorn’s upgrade route is also different from shaping a weapon Pattern. The Weapon Crafting Guide explains that separate system. Follow the Gjallarhorn quest and Catalyst screens for this weapon.
