The fastest way through a Diablo 4 leveling run in Season 15 is a short loop: Helltide and Whispers early, the Undercity from level 25, then War Plans and higher difficulties until you hit level 70 and Paragon begins. This guide gives you the route by level range, when to raise the difficulty, which XP boosts are worth running and what changed for leveling in Season of Hell's Legacy.

Diablo 4 Season 15 leveling route at a glance: Helltide and Whispers for levels 1 to 25, Undercity from level 25, War Plans from 50 to 70, Splinter of Lies for 25% bonus XP, 1700% bonus experience at Torment XII and Paragon from level 70.
The Season 15 leveling route at a glance. Each step is explained below.

How leveling works in Diablo 4 Season 15

Your character levels from 1 to 70 with the Lord of Hatred expansion. After 70, experience no longer raises your level and fills Paragon instead, which is where the real build power comes from. That means the first part of a season is a race: the sooner you are 70, the sooner your seasonal rewards, Glyphs and Paragon boards start to matter.

Three Season 15 changes make that race shorter. Expert and Penitent difficulties unlock when you finish the Prologue instead of the full campaign. All Unique items can drop from level 1 in any difficulty, so you can find build pieces while leveling. And Rebirth lets you convert an Eternal character into a Seasonal one at level 1, keeping its class, name, appearance and saved cosmetics.

If you use Rebirth, empty the character first. Anything still equipped or in the personal inventory is lost, so move it to your Eternal stash before you confirm.

Before you start: a 5-minute setup

A few choices before your first kill decide whether leveling takes an evening or a whole weekend. We run this checklist on every new seasonal character:

  1. Skip the campaign if you can. Once your account has finished it, start a seasonal character and skip straight to the open world. If you want War Plans, you also need to have completed the Lord of Hatred campaign once.
  2. Pick a leveling build, not your endgame build. Early on you want area damage and movement. Our Diablo 4 builds tier list marks the classes that level smoothly this season.
  3. Choose your Prime Evil Splinter early. You bear one at a time: Diablo's Splinter of Terror modifies Helltide and Infernal Hordes, Baal's Splinter of Destruction modifies the Undercity and Lair Bosses, and Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred modifies the Pit and Nightmare Dungeons. Match it to the activity you will level in.
  4. Keep an XP elixir running. Elixirs are cheap and the bonus stacks with everything else. Refresh them when you return to town.
  5. Group up if you can. Players nearby and in your party give extra experience, and kill speed rises with every member in Helltide and dungeons.

The fastest 1-70 route by level range

This is the route we use for a fresh seasonal character with the expansion. Push the difficulty as high as you can while packs still die in a few seconds; slow clears cost more XP than a lower multiplier does.

Diablo 4 Season 15 leveling route (checked Nov 1, 2026)

Level rangeMain activityDifficultyWhy it works
1-15Helltide, Whispers and the Season questline startNormal, then HardDense packs, quick Whisper bounties and early gear while your skills come online
15-25Helltide, Whisper dungeons, StrongholdsHard to ExpertStrongholds are one-off XP bursts with big elite packs, and Whisper caches now give more orbs
25-50Undercity (Jade Epiphany node if unlocked) or HelltideExpert to PenitentThe Undercity unlocks at 25 and its Jade Epiphany node now spawns twice the Experience Orbs
50-70War Plans with Helltide, Undercity and WhispersPenitent, then Torment I+War Plans XP rewards were increased and scale with Torment, so the higher you clear, the faster it goes
70+War Plans, Pit, Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal HordesTorment, push upwardAll XP goes to Paragon, and higher Torment and Pit tiers multiply it

If you do not own Lord of Hatred, the route is the same up to level 50, but War Plans are not available. Stay in Helltide, the Undercity and Whisper bounties, and use Strongholds you have not cleared yet as XP bursts.

Helltide vs Undercity vs War Plans: which is fastest?

All three work, and the best choice depends on your build and your Splinter. Season 15 shifted the balance a little: Blizzard reduced Experience Orbs from Plague Maggot Young on the Hellmouth node and cut Portent of Pain and Plague Devourers to 1-2 orbs instead of always 2, while it doubled the orbs from the Undercity's Jade Epiphany node and raised Whisper Cache orbs from 3-5 to 4-6.

Leveling in the Undercity

Pros

  • Short, repeatable runs with a clear finish
  • Jade Epiphany doubles the orbs it spawns
  • Easy to scale up difficulty run by run

Cons

  • Unlocks only at level 25
  • Fewer crafting materials than Helltide
  • Less useful without the matching Splinter path

When to raise the difficulty

Difficulty is the biggest XP multiplier you control. The ladder runs Normal, Hard, Expert, Penitent and then Torment I to XII. Season 15 raised the Torment bonuses again: Torment X went from 1200% to 1300% bonus experience, Torment XI from 1300% to 1500% and Torment XII from 1400% to 1700%.

Our rule of thumb is simple. If normal packs die in two or three seconds and elites do not threaten you, go up one step. If you die twice in the same activity or a Helltide event takes much longer than it used to, step down. A run you finish at a lower difficulty always beats a run you abandon.

The Pit follows the same logic later on: higher Pit tiers give more bonus experience (Pit Tier 150 now gives 2700%, up from 1800%), and the Choron's Soul Pit node doubles the XP from Progress Orbs.

XP boosts worth running

  1. Splinter of Lies (+25% bonus experience). A Soul Splinter you socket in jewelry. The drawback is that you are always Weakened and Vulnerable, so it suits leveling difficulties more than your hardest pushes. Remove it before Pit or boss attempts at your limit.
  2. War Plan Experience nodes. Magic, Rare, Legendary and Mythic Experience reward nodes now give twice the orbs, and in Torment X and above every War Plan node starts with 4 orbs instead of 2.
  3. Elixirs. Small, but they stack with everything and cost almost nothing.
  4. Party play. Grouping adds bonus experience and multiplies kill speed, which matters more than any single buff.
  5. Experience Wells. A Nightmare Sigil with the Forgotten Wisdom affix can spawn a well that gives a temporary XP buff. Players report a 15% bonus for an hour, so it is a good opener for a long session.

Level 70: starting Paragon

At 70 the goal changes from levels to power. Every point of XP now becomes a Paragon point, and Season 15's Season Ranks add up to 42 Paragon Points, 14 Skill Points and 5 Mythic Unique Caches on top. About 15% of the seasonal objectives need the expansion, including some for Rank VIII.

From here, level your Glyphs in the Pit (they now go up to level 150), keep War Plans running for Paragon XP and use our Diablo 4 Paragon board guide to plan your boards. For your first gear upgrades, the Diablo 4 gearing guide covers what each slot needs.

Season 16 is already on the test realm, and Blizzard has not announced its launch date. A character you level now moves to the Eternal realm when Season 15 ends, so the time is not wasted. Our Season 16 PTR guide covers what is changing next.

Common leveling mistakes

  1. Staying on Normal too long. Expert and Penitent now open after the Prologue. If you are one-shotting packs, you are leaving XP on the table.
  2. Playing the campaign on every character. Skip it once your account has finished it.
  3. Wearing Splinter of Lies at your limit. The XP bonus is worth nothing if being Weakened and Vulnerable keeps killing you.
  4. Ignoring the orbs. Several of this season's XP sources drop orbs on the ground. Collect them before moving on.
  5. Upgrading gear you will replace in an hour. Save materials for level 60-70 items and your endgame pieces.

Diablo 4 leveling FAQ

What is the fastest way to level in Diablo 4 Season 15?

Use Helltide and Whispers early, move to the Undercity at level 25 and run War Plans from about level 50 if you own Lord of Hatred. Push the difficulty to Expert or Penitent as soon as packs die quickly, use Splinter of Lies for 25% bonus experience and keep an elixir running.

What is the max level in Diablo 4?

Level 70 with the Lord of Hatred expansion. After that, experience goes into Paragon points instead of character levels, and Season Ranks in Season 15 add up to 42 extra Paragon Points.

Is Helltide or the Undercity better for leveling in Season 15?

Both are good. The Undercity is often faster from level 25, because Season 15 doubled the Experience Orbs from its Jade Epiphany node and two Helltide orb sources were reduced. Helltide gives more gear and materials along the way, so many players mix the two.

When do Expert and Penitent difficulties unlock?

In Season 15 they unlock when you finish the Prologue, not the full campaign. Torment difficulties come later and give much more bonus experience, up to 1700% at Torment XII.

What does Splinter of Lies do?

Splinter of Lies is a Soul Splinter you socket in jewelry. It gives 25% bonus experience, but you are always Weakened and Vulnerable while it is equipped, so use it for leveling rather than for your hardest content.

Do I need Lord of Hatred to level to 70?

Level 70 and War Plans come with Lord of Hatred, and War Plans need the expansion campaign to be completed once. Without the expansion you can still level with Helltide, the Undercity, Whispers and Strongholds.
