Destiny 2 Pale Heart Guide: Overthrow, Pathfinder & Exotics

Plan your Pale Heart route through Overthrow, Pathfinder, Ergo Sum, Micah-10 and Dual Destiny, with current loot changes and clear progression goals.

Game:Destiny 2GuidesPublished: By CFNBoost
A lone Guardian walks through an impossible lush landscape of white stone, vivid flowering trees and surreal planetary skies inside a cosmic realm.

The Pale Heart is The Final Shape’s destination inside the Traveler. After the campaign, its routes branch into Overthrow, destination reputation, Pathfinder, Ghost recovery and Exotic objectives. Choose one main goal for your visit and use the nearby activities to support it. Bungie’s Final Shape guide.

Start with campaign progress and the destination map

Bungie lists Pale Heart ranks as unlocking after completion of The Final Shape campaign. If a vendor or activity is still unavailable, check the campaign and post-campaign objectives on the character you are playing before treating it as a farming problem. Normal and Legendary campaign difficulties have different challenges and rewards; neither label is a checklist of every destination secret. Campaign and rank information.

For the current menu, use the Director’s Destinations screen. The separate Portal tab was retired in Update 9.7.0. If you want company for exploration, Bungie added Pale Heart to Fireteam Finder’s free-roam category in Update 9.1.0. Current Director changes. Fireteam Finder addition.

Overthrow: finish the event, not just one encounter

Overthrow takes place in The Landing, The Blooming and The Impasse. Its progression leads through four stages to a final boss. A chest from a smaller encounter is not the same as finishing that full cycle. The illustrated destination guide explains the Overthrow areas and boss stage.

  1. Choose the area that matches your tracked objective. A clear in another area may not advance a location-specific step.
  2. Follow the current Overthrow objective and progress display. Complete the encounter you have started and collect its reward before moving on.
  3. Continue through the stages until the final boss. When the boss is immune, solve the encounter requirement before spending more heavy ammo.
  4. Defeat the boss, claim the reward and check the tracked objective. If you are working toward a secret that appears after the clear, stay in the area long enough to look for its prompt.

For a first clear, favor a loadout that handles groups and lets you recover over one that only deals boss damage. In a fireteam, agree whether you are completing a cycle or stopping for a specific secret. If a step names a particular zone, keep that destination goal visible so an efficient combat run does not become the wrong run.

Pathfinder: completed nodes still need to form a claimed path

Pale Heart Pathfinder is a connected objective card. Progress can be made on different nodes, but reaching the end reward requires claiming a connected route through its tiers. A location-based Field Assignment may need its own encounter while the objective is active; ordinary nearby kills are not a substitute for that named task. Bungie’s Pathfinder explanation.

  1. Inspect the end reward and pick a connected route with objectives you can complete during this visit.
  2. Match your weapons or abilities to the selected tasks, then choose an Overthrow area or named location that fits.
  3. Claim completed nodes along the route, then claim the end reward. Read the reset cost and next reward before starting another card.

Use the card shown in your game for reward quantities and reset details. A 2024 reward chart is useful background, but it should not be presented as a current guaranteed payout. If several nodes are already complete, first check whether they are connected and claimed rather than repeating the same fight.

Ergo Sum: first unlock, extra rolls and catalyst are different goals

The documented first-acquisition route follows the campaign into Destined Heroes: Queens I, Lost in the Light, Found in the Dark and the Dyadic Prism step. The linked missions also add Prismatic options. Once the sword is unlocked, Pathfinder and Overthrow provide routes for further rolls. The dated Ergo Sum walkthrough.

Follow the unfinished step on your character. Replaying a mission already marked complete is less useful than identifying which linked quest still remains. After acquisition, decide which frame and perk you want before farming more copies; collecting one sword does not mean you have the roll you were aiming for.

The catalyst is a separate goal. Bungie’s June 2026 update confirms Grandmaster Excision as its reward source. A standard Overthrow clear or a Normal Excision completion should not be treated as that catalyst objective. Bungie’s Excision reward note.

Micah-10, lost Ghosts and Cysts

The Ghost-recovery route starts after campaign progress and Queens I, at Micah-10’s Lost Ghost Analytics. Convalescence introduces finding and healing a Ghost; Alone in the Dark then repeats a sequence involving a Lost Sector, Overthrow and a Cyst. Illustrated Ghost-recovery guide.

Keep the assigned Ghost and its search area tracked. Finding it is one step, not the end of the healing chain. In the illustrated first example, the search leads into The Forgotten Deep; later assignments should be followed from their own markers. Return to the requested objective when you finish the relevant Cyst instead of assuming any Cyst clear completes the same task.

Dual Destiny and Exotic class-item farming

The documented Dual Destiny unlock route uses full Overthrow clears and post-clear Secret-Keepers in the three main zones, followed by the Light/Dark orb sequence in The Refraction. Once the mission is available, bring a partner and coordinate its mechanics. The illustrated mission-unlock guide.

Keep access and perk farming separate. Check the mission node and the class items you have already unlocked before repeating preparation steps. Do not assume an old per-character requirement or a launch-era vendor schedule still describes your account; use the eligibility and offers currently displayed in the game. An available drop source also does not guarantee a chosen pair of perks.

Crafting patterns and rewards after Update 9.7.0

The current patch notes changed Pale Heart loot pools to avoid dropping those weapons after all crafting patterns are unlocked. If drops look different once you finish the patterns, that is relevant context. The same update fixed completed secret Triumphs whose descriptions stayed hidden. Pale Heart reward and Triumph changes.

Before another farming session, check whether you need a missing pattern, a finished crafted weapon, an Exotic roll or a Triumph. These are different completion records. Keep notes by reward or objective name rather than counting every chest as equal progress toward all four.

Pale Heart questions

Frequently asked questions

What should I prioritize after the campaign?

Choose the unfinished objective you care about: destination progress, a Pathfinder reward, an Exotic unlock or Ghost recovery. Use the route table to avoid switching goals every time another icon appears.

Why is a completed Pathfinder task not giving the final reward?

Check that completed nodes are claimed and connected through the required tiers. Progress on an isolated node is not the same as finishing the reward path.

Does any Overthrow chest count as a full clear?

No. Follow the event through the final boss when your objective requires an Overthrow completion. Smaller encounter rewards are intermediate progress.

Is this a map of every hidden collectible?

This guide covers access, activity loops and reward choices. Use the linked illustrated guides when you need their specific locations.
