Destiny 2 Kepler Guide: Abilities, Chests & Progression
Find Kepler in the Director, understand Matterspark, Rosetta, Relocator and Mattermorph, and plan chest upgrades, campaign progress and gear farming.
Kepler is the destination for The Edge of Fate, built around exploration and abilities that open new routes. The useful first goal is to progress those abilities, not to search every blocked chest immediately. This guide explains how to enter Kepler, recognize an ability gate and choose between campaign progress, secrets and gear farming. Bungie’s expansion guide.
How to get to Kepler in the current Director
Open the Director’s Destinations tab and select Kepler. Update 9.7.0 moved it there and retired the separate Portal tab, so launch-era directions through the Portal or Timeline show an older menu. Current navigation change in Bungie’s patch notes.
Once inside the destination screen, select the activity that matches what you want to do. A campaign mission, a destination difficulty and a farming playlist are different choices. Check any access requirement shown on the activity before launching; changing the menu does not complete unfinished character progression.
The four abilities that shape exploration
Three of Kepler’s tools change how you move through the environment; Rosetta helps you interpret its language gates. They are destination abilities rather than a reason to rebuild your entire subclass. Bungie’s reveal explains the movement tools.
Kepler ability guide
| Ability | What it helps you do | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Matterspark | Move in an energy form through narrow routes and across terrain | Small passages and energy-powered mechanisms |
| Relocator | Teleport using Fallen technology | Relocator equipment and its linked route |
| Mattermorph | Change parts of the environment with dark matter and Strand | Objects or structures that can be rearranged |
| Rosetta | Understand Aionian language gates | A message asking for more language knowledge |
Treat a blocked route as a question about the required tool. Stop at the interaction prompt, identify what is missing and decide whether to continue the campaign or return after an upgrade. Jumping at the same sealed entrance with a different movement build will not solve a missing ability requirement.
Why a Kepler mystery chest will not open
The chest’s requirement tells you which ability needs attention. The July 2025 illustrated guide links language knowledge to Rosetta, stronger energy to Matterspark, upgraded Fallen technology to Relocator, and missing technology to Mattermorph. See the chest examples and upgrade routes.
- Read the chest message before trying to open it again. Identify the ability rather than assuming every sealed chest is the same puzzle.
- Compare the requirement with the upgrade you have unlocked. Record the location of anything you cannot open yet.
- Return when you have the necessary upgrade and follow that chest’s mechanism; opening access and solving its nearby puzzle are separate checks.
Campaign first, then a focused return route
The launch progression routes pair Central Academy Strangelet with Rosetta upgrades and Exile’s Accord Strangelet with Relocator. Those chains lead onward through Outer Steppes and The Gorge for further tools. Use your active quest to choose the next step rather than collecting random locked chests. The dated illustrated upgrade guide maps those chains.
For a first visit, keep the campaign objective as your route. When you encounter a side path that needs an unavailable tool, leave it on a short return list. On the next pass, group the remaining locations by ability: this keeps you from searching the same area several times without gaining access.
- A movement gate: note which ability or upgrade is missing and return after progressing it.
- An optional chest: record the area and requirement, then continue the objective you came for.
- A fight you cannot finish comfortably: use a controllable combat setup before adding more optional detours.
- A completed objective: check what actually unlocked before planning another visit.
Campaign difficulty is not the same as a world tier
Bungie separates the campaign’s Normal and Legendary choices from Kepler’s world-tier system. Legendary missions have stronger enemies and additional rewards for completing the full Legendary campaign per class. Choose that challenge for its campaign objective; do not assume that it automatically replaces every destination upgrade step. Campaign and world-tier overview.
For a learning run, a difficulty you can complete consistently lets you understand the route. If your goal is a harder clear, agree on that goal before forming the fireteam. Compare the specific activity’s requirements and rewards instead of treating “Legendary campaign,” a destination tier and an Ops grade as interchangeable labels.
Where to look for Kepler gear
Kepler’s gear sources include exploration chests, secrets, campaign missions and engram focusing with local resources. Bungie’s original gear guide also describes destination reward-tier upgrades tied to progression. This explains the structure of the destination loop; it is not a promise that a particular chest guarantees a specific roll today. Destination gear-system explanation.
Pick a run that fits your goal
| Your goal | Activity or check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Advance the destination | The unfinished campaign or upgrade objective | Unlocks useful access before another exploration pass |
| Collect secrets | Missing locations for an ability you already have | Keeps the visit focused on accessible objectives |
| Claim a weekly mission reward | The current weekly mission card and completion state | First-clear rewards and repeat rewards may differ |
| Farm more destination gear | Time Latch Missions or The Sieve when available | A repeatable loot goal differs from campaign completion |
Bungie’s August 2025 correction clarified that each of the two weekly missions awarded its high-tier Kepler piece on the first weekly completion, while Time Latch Missions and an active Sieve were repeat-farming options. Check the current card before repeating a weekly mission expecting the same first-clear reward again. Weekly reward clarification.
The Sieve: plan around the active event
The Sieve is Kepler’s activity involving the House of Exile and Vex. Use its availability on the destination screen to decide whether it belongs in this visit. Bungie’s Sieve overview. Keep a separate goal for it: if you entered to unlock an ability, an available event should not make you lose track of that unfinished step.
If The Sieve is unavailable, choose another objective you can finish now rather than waiting beside a launch point without a plan. This guide does not supply a fixed event timetable or a guaranteed loot tier: those details should come from the current activity display.
Kepler questions
Frequently asked questions
Why do old guides send me to a different menu?
Kepler has moved between menus since launch. Update 9.7.0 puts it in the Director’s Destinations tab; use that route for the current version.
Should I open every chest as soon as I see it?
Read the requirement first. Mark a chest that needs an unavailable upgrade and come back after progressing that ability.
Does Legendary mean every exploration objective is complete?
No. Check campaign completion, destination abilities and remaining secrets separately. The labels describe different goals.
Can I use this as a complete collectible-location map?
This is an access and progression guide. It explains how to organize your exploration, but it does not claim to list every collectible coordinate.
