Destiny 2 The Whisper Guide: Weapon & Catalyst
Find The Whisper in Pinnacle Ops, follow the mission route, and distinguish weapon rewards, catalyst completion and Oracle Triumphs.
The Whisper is the Exotic mission associated with Whisper of the Worm, a Power sniper rifle. Start by deciding whether you want your first weapon, its catalyst, or upgrades for the crafted version. Those are different goals: finishing one run is not the same as completing every upgrade. Bungie introduced the craftable version with the reprised mission in 2024.
Where to find The Whisper now
The Whisper is available to all players. For the current version, open the Director’s Destinations tab and find The Whisper under Pinnacle Ops. Update 9.7.0 moved Ops into the Director and deprecated the old mission quests. Bungie’s 9.7.0 patch notes.
Earlier guides show Legends or a separate Portal tab. Those are historical menus, not the current launch route. Use the mission’s reward panel and selected difficulty to plan today’s run, rather than looking for an old quest at a vendor.
- Open The Whisper in Pinnacle Ops and inspect its current rewards.
- Choose the difficulty that matches the reward you need. Check launch requirements before starting.
- Agree on the goal with your fireteam: a completion reward or a secret-collection run.
Choose the reward you are working toward
Whisper rewards are separate objectives
| Goal | What to check before starting | How to check afterward |
|---|---|---|
| First weapon | Weapon reward listed by the selected activity | Completion rewards and your weapon inventory |
| Catalyst | Current activity reward panel and required difficulty | Catalyst acquisition, then its own completion objective |
| Crafting upgrades | Current reward panel and upgrades already unlocked | Available choices on the crafted weapon |
| Collection reward | Your Oracular Seeker triumph progress | Recorded Oracle progress and the ship reward |
Record the weapon, catalyst or crafted upgrade you still need before another run. Each player should compare their own unlocked rewards with the selected activity: one teammate’s completed upgrade does not show what the rest of the group still lacks.
Prepare for the jumps and the final fight
For a first attempt, prioritize a movement setup you can control and a way to recover when a jump or fight goes wrong. This is more useful than copying a speedrun loadout you have never used. Try the jump ability somewhere safe before launch, then keep the setup consistent while learning the route.
- Bring a comfortable weapon for smaller Taken enemies and a separate damage option for the boss.
- Give the group one clear meeting point after the jumping section. Do not leave someone guessing which opening to use.
- Leave secret hunting for a dedicated run if it is making you lose the route.
- At an unfamiliar hazard, watch one cycle before committing to the jump. Rushing the same failed jump repeatedly usually costs more time.
The Whisper route: entrance to Tulgorh
These landmarks describe the reprised mission route documented in the April 2024 walkthrough. Use them to orient yourself, alongside the requirements on your current activity card. The illustrated walkthrough includes room images.
- Entrance: use the small opening on the left of the rock face, defeat the Centurion and break the Taken Blight to descend.
- Vex passages: time the moving wall blocks. In the room of circular openings, the route uses the last opening on the right.
- Green room: look for the low gap on your right after dropping to its base floor; continue through the wall-jumping section.
- Combat arena: clear the Taken, then summon and defeat the three bosses with the Vex cubes.
- Tulgorh: kill the two rear Taken Witches when his shield appears. Defeat him, then open the final chest.
For a learning run, call out landmarks instead of telling a teammate to “just follow.” If somebody falls behind, explain the next opening before moving on. In combat, separate the immediate threat from the damage opportunity: staying alive and recognizing an immune boss matters more than firing every heavy round as soon as the boss appears.
Catalyst and crafted-weapon upgrades
The old Whispers of the Taken quests were deprecated in Update 9.7.0. Exotic rewards now come from activity completion; secrets remain for their associated Triumphs. Follow the current rewards panel instead of taking Taken Essence or quest-blight steps from a 2024 guide. Current reward-system change.
Acquiring a catalyst and completing it are separate checks. Open the weapon’s catalyst socket and read the remaining objective; Bungie’s inventory entry describes defeating targets with Whisper of the Worm for the masterwork upgrade. Whisper’s official weapon entry.
White Nail rewards precise shooting: three rapid precision hits refill the magazine. Practice holding your aim through a damage opportunity. For the crafted version, inspect the upgrades already available to you and compare them with the rewards of your selected run; an old quest checklist is no longer the acquisition route. Whisper’s weapon entry.
Oracles and the collection reward
The reprised mission contains seven hidden Oracles linked to Oracular Seeker and Karve of the Worm. Treat that collection as a separate goal from the current activity’s Exotic rewards. In 2024, Oracle collection also formed part of the intrinsic-upgrade route; that older route should not be read as a current mandatory upgrade checklist. Illustrated Oracle locations.
Plan a collection run around your missing locations. Note the ones already recorded, check progress after collecting a new one, and save that record before leaving. If your group wants different objectives, say so before starting: a first clear and a full secret hunt need different pacing. Do not rely on launch-week instructions telling you to wait for another weekly set; the linked guide covers all seven locations.
If the reward you expected is missing
- Recheck the activity rewards and chosen difficulty. A completion does not automatically finish a separate collection Triumph.
- Compare the selected Pinnacle Ops version with the reward you wanted. Do not troubleshoot against a deprecated vendor quest.
- Check weapon inventory, the catalyst socket and the relevant Triumph separately.
- Record the chosen difficulty and missing reward before another attempt. Consult current Bungie Help if the same eligible completion still fails.
Before repeating the run, identify the missing result and what the game recorded. Avoid dismantling the weapon as a guessed fix. Keep secret progress and activity rewards separate so you do not repeat the wrong objective.
The Whisper questions
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an expansion to enter The Whisper?
The Whisper is available to all players. Choose the current Pinnacle Ops entry and check the requirements of the difficulty you select.
Should I collect secrets on my first attempt?
If the route is unfamiliar, focus on learning the jumps and finishing the fight. A separate collection attempt lets you stop at missing locations without pulling the group away from a first-clear goal.
Do I still need the old Whispers of the Taken quests?
No. Update 9.7.0 deprecated the old mission quests and moved Exotic rewards to activity completion. Follow the current reward panel; secrets remain separate Triumph objectives.
Can I follow an old timer or Power requirement?
Use the requirements displayed on the current activity card. The linked 2024 walkthrough is useful for room landmarks, but its launch-era settings are not a current requirements table.
