Destiny 2 The Navigator Guide: Drop & Catalyst
Find The Navigator in Ghosts of the Deep, improve drop chances with five Triumphs, follow the three Catalyst stages and check Gordian Knot’s 700-target objective.
The Navigator is a Strand Exotic Trace Rifle from Ghosts of the Deep. It supports teammates with Woven Mail, severs enemies through sustained fire and gains Grapple Tangle creation from its Catalyst. Getting the rifle, acquiring that Catalyst and completing the upgrade are separate goals.
Reviewed October 15, 2026. This guide separates the final-boss weapon drop from the three-stage secret encounter, explains the current 700-target Catalyst objective and identifies the Triumphs that improve weapon-drop chances.
Where The Navigator Drops
The Navigator is a random reward from Šimmumah ur-Nokru, the final boss of Ghosts of the Deep. Opening an earlier encounter chest is not the same weapon opportunity. Sam Chandler’s weapon-acquisition guide.
The current weapon definition still names Ghosts of the Deep as its source. It is an all-class weapon: being Strand does not make it exclusive to a particular Guardian class. Navigator’s Companion tracks obtaining the rifle. Current official weapon and acquisition record.
Update 9.7.0 moved Ghosts of the Deep from Legends into the Director’s Raids and Dungeons node. Its featured-activity reward changes concern gear tiers; they do not establish a Navigator drop percentage. Official delivered activity changes.
For encounter mechanics rather than just the Exotic objective, use the Ghosts of the Deep Guide. Keep your first run focused on learning the activity before planning repeated final-boss attempts.
Weapon Drop, Catalyst and Upgrade: Three Different Goals
Choose the correct objective
| Goal | What you need to do | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Obtain The Navigator | Complete an eligible final-boss reward attempt. | A specific clear count or drop percentage. |
| Acquire the Catalyst | Complete the hidden three-stage Thul-Ar sequence after obtaining the rifle. | An ordinary final-boss kill is not this secret encounter. |
| Complete the upgrade | Progress the 700-target objective and follow the weapon’s remaining instructions. | Owning the base rifle alone does not unlock Gordian Knot. |
Weekly Attempts and Featured Dungeon Farming
On non-featured weeks, the established schedule is one eligible final-boss reward per class each week. Featured Ghosts weeks allow repeated boss farming. Established weapon reward cadence.
Check the live featured dungeon before committing to repeated clears. A repeatable Legendary reward is not proof of unlimited Exotic chances on every difficulty. This page does not claim Ghosts is featured today or assign a percentage to your next chest.
Keep a simple record of the class used and whether its eligible reward has been claimed. A boss checkpoint can shorten a planned weapon attempt, but it skips earlier areas needed for the Catalyst route. Pick the route that matches your goal.
Triumphs That Increase The Navigator Drop Chance
Five current drop-chance Triumphs
| Triumph | Requirement | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| In Memoriam | Find and listen to all 12 Memory of Darkness collectibles. | A collection route, not a solo challenge. |
| Sovereign | Complete Ghosts of the Deep on Master. | A higher-difficulty completion. |
| Alone in the Deep | Finish every encounter solo without leaving. | Deaths are not excluded by this Triumph’s wording. |
| Deny Death | Finish every encounter without dying or leaving. | Its requirement does not specify solo. |
| King of the Deep | Finish every encounter solo without dying or leaving. | The combined Solo Flawless objective. |
Each of these five current records includes the Navigator drop-rate increase reward. The definitions do not state the size of each increase. In Memoriam has 12 individual collection objectives. Claim completed Triumphs and check your own progress rather than treating a quoted community percentage as an official rate. Current Triumph requirements and reward entries.
A practical order is to plan a learning clear and collectible route first, then choose harder challenges only when you want those achievements too. Attempting a solo flawless run solely to avoid an uncertain drop can turn a short farming plan into a much larger commitment.
The Navigator Catalyst: Three Hidden Statue Stages
Obtain The Navigator before planning its secret encounter. Begin at the start of the regular Ghosts of the Deep dungeon so the team can visit all three stages in sequence. Tell the group this is a Catalyst route before anyone skips ahead.
Bungie’s June 10, 2025 Update 8.2.6.4 removed the Navigator Catalyst sequence from Rite of the Nine’s Explorer version because that version did not award it. Use the regular dungeon route for this objective. Official Explorer-mode correction.
Compact Ghost-pile and statue route
| Stage | Find the Ghost pile | Carry the Vestige and complete the stage |
|---|---|---|
| New Pacific Arcology | Check the side room beyond the first Memory of Darkness for the Ghost pile. | Carry its Vestige to the statue below the central overhead platform. |
| Hallowfathom | After the sunken ship and underwater passage, inspect the right-hand platform for Ghosts. | Backtrack through the water to the statue near the first secret-chest area. |
| Wreckage traversal | At the long platform hall, check behind the large Hive lantern on the first platform. | Cross to the statue on the final building; finish the third fight and collect the chest. |
Noah Nelson’s illustrated three-stage location guide.
Defeat the Runebound Visages and use their Piercing Light pool to break Thul-Ar’s protection. He retreats after the earlier stages. At the last stage, defeat him and crush his Ghost. Secret-encounter account.
Scout each return path before collecting a timed Vestige. Clear enemies where possible, then collect the buff and move to the statue. Agree who is handling the interaction while the others watch the route. This is preparation advice, not a promise that a particular movement shortcut will work for every loadout.
Complete the Catalyst and Use Gordian Knot
The current Catalyst record lists a 700-target objective with The Navigator. Its description also refers to repeating the secret encounter. Acquire the Catalyst first, then track the weapon’s own progress and any remaining encounter instruction; do not assume the kill counter alone proves the whole upgrade is complete. Official Catalyst record and objective.
Gordian Knot adds an alternate reload followed by a shot that places a Grapple Tangle where you aim. Use the input shown by your control layout. Creating that anchor and having a Grapple ability available to use it are different things. Current Catalyst perk definition.
Practice placing the anchor somewhere the team can see and reach before using it during an encounter. Aim for a useful route or regrouping point. The perk does not mean every class or subclass receives a Grapple grenade merely by equipping the rifle.
Protective Weave and Weft Cutter
What each weapon effect does
| Effect | Current role | How to use it deliberately |
|---|---|---|
| Protective Weave | Firing at an ally gives Woven Mail to that ally and the wielder; the rifle benefits while the wielder has it. | Coordinate a support shot when the teammate is visible. |
| Weft Cutter | Continued damage applies Sever to the enemy. | Keep the beam on the intended target. |
| Gordian Knot · Catalyst | Alternate reload and fire create a Grapple Tangle. | Choose the anchor position before the movement. |
Update 9.0.0.1 added a Woven Mail damage bonus of 25% in PvE and 5% in PvP, plus improved Ammo Generation while that buff is active. These are the delivered patch values, not a new CFNBoost damage test. Official delivered weapon tuning.
The current intrinsic description retains the damage benefit while Woven Mail is active. This supports reading The Navigator as a support-and-utility option, rather than using a launch-era description that ignores its later damage benefit. It does not establish a best-in-slot ranking or guarantee that an old grapple-damage clip matches today’s build.
