Destiny 2 Ghosts of the Deep Guide: Encounters & Rewards
Plan Ghosts of the Deep Vestige carries, underwater routes, Ecthar and Ĺ immumah. Check current dungeon rewards, Navigator goals and coaching scope.
Ghosts of the Deep combines rune matching, timed Vestige carries and slow underwater travel. A group can survive the enemies and still lose progress by sending the wrong player to deposit or forgetting a symbol. Plan the carrier and destination before finishing a Lightbearer’s Ghost.
Reviewed October 14, 2026. This guide summarizes the ordinary dungeon’s three encounters and practical preparation. Player walkthroughs support the encounter mechanics; Bungie publications support current access and rewards. The advice is original editorial guidance, without a measured damage ranking or claimed CFNBoost PRO recording.
Ghosts of the Deep: Three Encounters at a Glance
A compact route and responsibility plan
| Encounter | Main task | Role to agree |
|---|---|---|
| Break the Ritual | Return a Vestige to the matching revealed statue. | Rune caller, carrier and escort. |
| Ecthar, the Shield of Savathûn | Read underwater runes, process Wizards and open shield damage. | Rune runner, Vestige carrier and room control. |
| Šimmumah ur-Nokru | Match chamber runes to body sites and break the boss’s shield. | Ritual caller, chamber runner and moth control. |
Treat the role names as an original learning plan, not a restriction on who may act. Before each attempt, name who takes the Ghost, who remembers the rune and who protects the return. In solo play, arrange those jobs in a manageable sequence instead of trying to do everything at the same moment.
Current Access and the Run Goal
The released Director update moves Ghosts of the Deep to the Raids and Dungeons node on Destinations. The old H.E.L.M. launch instruction is historical. Released Director changes.
Bungie still requires the corresponding expansion or Dungeon Key for specific activities. Read the live launch card for access, difficulty and modifiers. Current activity-access guidance.
Decide whether the run is an ordinary clear, Master attempt, solo objective or optional collectible route. A Catalyst puzzle and a full title add their own steps. This guide covers the core dungeon; do not assume a separate event variant uses identical reward or deposit rules.
Vestige of Light: Name the Carrier Before the Finisher
The player who finishes the Lucent Hive Ghost receives the timed Vestige. Deepsight exposes information needed for the ritual. Agree the return destination before the carrier starts moving, and read the timer rather than relying on a remembered duration. Player Vestige and ritual explanation.
The deposit rule changes by encounter
| Where you are | What the carrier deposits into |
|---|---|
| Opening ritual | The revealed statue matching the tracked rune. |
| Ecthar | An available ritual statue after a Wizard Ghost finisher. |
| Ĺ immumah | The active body site matching the rune from that side chamber. |
Use a brief call such as “I have the Vestige; returning to the confirmed symbol.” If someone else finishes the Ghost, acknowledge the new carrier immediately. Room-control players should keep the return and information action clear rather than assume the carrier can stop to fight every enemy.
Break the Ritual: Follow the Rune and Return
- Defeat the opening Hive and Soulfire Binder Ogre to reveal the trail.
- Follow the trail through three combat sites and remember the repeated rune.
- Finish the last site’s Lightbearer Ghost with the assigned carrier.
- Return, defeat the Veilweaver Wizard, use Deepsight and imbue the matching statue.
- Complete four successful deposits to open the route forward.
These are condensed encounter steps from the player walkthrough, cross-checked with the community wiki. Opening ritual reference.
Read the symbol before clearing the site. If its shape is unfamiliar, describe it and have another player repeat the description. On the return, let the escort handle the Wizard and nearby pressure so the carrier can concentrate on the deposit. A confident-sounding but unconfirmed symbol call is worse than taking a moment to read it again.
Underwater Travel: Watch Pressure Resistance
Underwater movement is slower, and Pressure Resistance must be managed along the route. Refill at available bubbles and let the counter recover before continuing. Ecthar’s underwater presence adds pressure rather than providing a normal damage opportunity. Community traversal review.
- Enter a flooded section with the pressure state ready for the crossing.
- Identify the next refill or dry exit before leaving the current safe position.
- Call an occupied or missing refill so the next player can choose their timing.
- Avoid stopping for optional exploration while the pressure counter is running out.
Do not assume every flooded passage has a refill in the same place. Learn the route while the group is together, and report a wrong turn early. A planned pause for a teammate is more useful than reaching the next encounter alone while someone is struggling to find the exit.
Ecthar: Read Runes, Handle Wizards, Break the Shield
Defeat the three Blistered Knights and the Keeper of the Deep Ogre, then use Deepsight to read three lit wall runes. Touch their underwater matches to summon Lightbearer Wizards upstairs. Their Ghost finishers provide the Vestiges for three statue deposits. Community Ecthar mechanic reference.
- Have the caller repeat all three lit runes before the underwater runner leaves.
- The runner touches confirmed matches while the surface players control Wizards and other enemies.
- Assign each Wizard Ghost and deposit its Vestige at an available statue.
- After three deposits, defeat the Wellkeeper Knight and use its pool to break Ecthar’s shield.
- Damage the boss; repeat the setup if immunity returns, then finish the defeated boss’s Ghost.
Once the shield breaks, damage can continue away from the pool. Ecthar shield-phase reference.
A first-clear group can keep one player responsible for the underwater read and another for the surface deposits. If the runner forgets a rune, stop guessing and reacquire the information. During damage, choose an attack that remains controllable when Ecthar closes the distance or crosses in front of teammates.
Ĺ immumah: Body Sites, Chamber Runes and Deposits
Use Deepsight to identify three active points on Oryx’s body. At each, defeat Vorlog while standing in the ritual ring, then align the floating lens and mark to reveal that site’s rune. Match the side-chamber runes to those revealed sites. Player final-encounter explanation.
The later community review recommends completing the non-Heart sites before Heart, because the boss starts at Heart and must move for the reveal. Confirm that the lens and rune actually appear instead of counting any Vorlog defeat as progress. Reviewed reveal-order guidance.
- Agree names for the three active body sites and read each resolved rune.
- In a side chamber, record the rune before killing its Lightbearer and finishing the Ghost.
- Return with the Vestige, reacquire Deepsight and deposit at the matching active site.
- Repeat for all three chambers, then use a ritual pool granting Piercing Light to break the shield.
- Damage while controlling moths and adds; repeat when immunity returns and finish the final Ghost.
Clear Lucent Moths promptly and keep the rune-to-site calls consistent when chamber runners return. Final-encounter survival and deposit reference.
Call the destination by the body landmark and rune rather than saying only “left.” Before splitting up, confirm whether left and right refer to Oryx or to the player’s view. Keep the damage plan flexible if the boss moves; reaching a comfortable firing position matters more than continuing a shot while you cannot see the target.
A Recovery Checklist for Repeated Failed Attempts
Identify the failing step before changing the whole loadout
| Problem you observed | Next adjustment to try |
|---|---|
| The wrong player was expected to deposit | Name and confirm the Ghost finisher before the next carry. |
| The returning rune call was unclear | Record the symbol and its destination together. |
| A flooded route became rushed | Plan the next refill or exit before starting the crossing. |
| Damage attempts lost the encounter role | Keep a caller responsible for the transition back to mechanics. |
Change one assignment or action at a time. A failed deposit should lead to checking the carrier, rune and Deepsight state before replacing every weapon. A rushed crossing should lead to route practice before assuming more boss damage will solve it.
Current Dungeon Rewards and Featured Status
The released June framework updates older dungeons with tiered weapons and armor. Featured status and difficulty change the reward rules. Bungie’s released dungeon-reward framework.
Compare the activity state shown in the live Director
| Activity state | Published reward rule |
|---|---|
| Featured Standard | Tier 5 weapons and armor from encounters. |
| Featured Master | Tier 5 weapons and armor from encounters. |
| Featured Director Challenge and hidden chests | Tier 5 rewards with the specified weekly lockout. |
| Non-featured Standard | Tier 3 weapons and armor. |
| Non-featured Master | Tier 5 weapons and armor. |
The update describes featured encounter rewards as farmable unless a source is marked weekly. Check the live activity preview for the actual week and selected variant. An older Master-Artifice headline or fixed Power number should not replace the current reward and modifier information.
The Navigator, Its Catalyst and Optional Progress
The Navigator is an Exotic reward associated with the final encounter, rather than an automatic result of every clear. Its Catalyst has a separate optional route: bring the weapon, process three hidden statue stages and defeat the additional Lightbearer. Navigator acquisition and Catalyst-route reference.
That launch-era route is cross-checked with the later core-dungeon review. This overview does not promise an event-variant result or an exact kill counter; read the current weapon objective for completion. Core-dungeon Catalyst review.
Plan an optional route before starting so the team knows where it must pause. Memories, hidden chests, the Catalyst and title records are different goals. Obtaining a weapon, unlocking its Catalyst and finishing the Catalyst progress are also separate stages.
Build and Loadout Coaching for Your Next Attempt
A timed CFNBoost coaching discussion can help you review the equipment you own and the decisions causing repeated mistakes. Bring a saved loadout and a specific question, such as handling close-range pressure, recovering a missed rune call or choosing a controllable damage plan.

Ghosts of the Deep FAQ
Carriers, preparation and session scope
Who receives the Vestige after a Lightbearer is defeated?
The player who finishes its Ghost receives the timed carry. Name that player before the finisher so the group knows who must return and deposit.
Do all three encounters use the same statue rule?
No. The opening matches a tracked rune, Ecthar uses available ritual statues, and the final encounter matches a chamber rune to an active body site.
Should I rush through a flooded section with low pressure time?
Use a planned refill or exit and communicate the route. Guessing a shortcut under time pressure often makes recovery harder for the whole team.
What should I check if a Vorlog kill does not reveal the rune?
Check the marked ritual position and whether the lens actually appeared. Confirm the site rather than assuming any kill completed its reveal.
Does every clear guarantee The Navigator?
No. Treat the selected clear and a specific random Exotic reward as different outcomes. The Catalyst also has separate acquisition and completion steps.
Where should I check the current Power and rewards?
Read the live launch card and activity preview for the chosen version. Historical launch requirements and old weekly assumptions are not a current preparation plan.
Does the listed coaching session include a dungeon clear?
No. These are timed build and loadout discussions. They do not include Ghosts of the Deep completion, new equipment or guaranteed solo progress.
Is another Self-play fee added to coaching?
No. The listed sessions already include Self-play participation. The separate 20% boosting surcharge does not apply.
