Destiny 2 Necrochasm: Bottomless Pit & Catalyst
Complete Bottomless Pit, collect 20 Essence for Necrochasm, follow both Catalyst trials and understand the 35-total Essence requirement and One for Thrall.
Necrochasm is the Kinetic Exotic Auto Rifle earned through Bottomless Pit in Crota鈥檚 End. Its route uses Husk of the Pit, Essence of the Oversoul and a final Crota objective. Its Catalyst adds One for Thrall and has both a raid-puzzle requirement and a cumulative Essence threshold.
Reviewed October 15, 2026. The current quest still separates 100 Hive progress, 20 Essence and defeating Crota. The Catalyst requires 35 Essence in total; this is not 35 extra after the weapon, and it is not a weapon-kill counter.
Start Bottomless Pit and Claim Husk of the Pit
After defeating Crota, interact with the end-of-raid Sword of Crota vendor and claim Bottomless Pit. Its opening weapon is Husk of the Pit. Quest pickup account.
The current definitions identify three distinct rifles: Husk of the Pit, Eidolon Ally and Necrochasm. Keep the quest tracked while working through them. Hive progress requires Husk of the Pit final blows; using Eidolon Ally or a different rifle is not the first step鈥檚 stated condition. Official weapon and quest definitions.

Bottomless Pit: The Three Current Quest Steps

The current quest order explicitly ends with defeating Crota. If the Essence counter is complete but Necrochasm is missing, inspect the final step before continuing to farm Essence. A full material counter and a completed quest reward are different states. Current ordered quest and objectives.
Husk鈥檚 objective grants extra progress for its Hive final blows inside Crota鈥檚 End. You can work on it while learning the raid, provided the group knows your role. Protecting an encounter mechanic still takes priority over trying to finish a weapon counter during a handoff.
How to Farm Essence of the Oversoul
Bungie鈥檚 September 14, 2023 announcement describes two guaranteed Essence for the first full clear of a week: the weekly Crota reward and an additional bonus for finishing every encounter in order. Later ordered full clears retain that extra full-run Essence. Repeat encounter clears can also drop random Essence, and a rare full-run Crota reward can supply enough for both weapon and Catalyst progression. Official published Essence progression changes.
Plan a complete ordered run when pursuing the full-run bonus or rare full-run reward. A Crota checkpoint can serve a final quest kill, but it is not the same activity history as completing Abyss, Bridge, Ir Y没t and Crota in order.
The announcement above describes the progression system introduced in September 2023. Check your present quest and reward state after a clear. This guide does not assign a jackpot percentage or promise that a certain number of runs will finish your collection.
Raid Triumphs provide another source. Their current reward entries are listed below. These are rewards for completing the named records, not an extra payment every time you repeat an already claimed Triumph.

These eleven current records total 14 Essence in their listed reward entries. That sum is a planning total if every record remains unclaimed; it is not a single-run reward or a replacement for your account鈥檚 actual progress. Official current Triumph rewards.
Choose achievements that fit the group鈥檚 goals and skill. A Master or flawless objective is a larger commitment than a normal learning clear. Check which records you already own before arranging a team around rewards you may have claimed.
Necrochasm Catalyst: 35 Total Essence
The Catalyst threshold is 35 cumulative Essence. The 20 used for the weapon count toward it: from exactly 20, you need 15 more. Acquiring the Catalyst item through both timed trials remains a separate requirement. Current community progression explanation.
The current official Catalyst objective tracks 35 Essence of the Oversoul from the raid and its Triumphs. It does not ask for hundreds of Necrochasm kills. Inspect both the unlocked Catalyst item and its Essence progress before deciding which activity to repeat. Official Catalyst record and objective.
If a Collections notification appears when the Essence threshold is reached, confirm whether the timed trials were completed too. More Essence will not replace the missing puzzle. If the item is acquired but the counter is short, then collection progress is the remaining job.
Two Timed Catalyst Trials: Plate Locations

Complete both trials in the same active raid instance. In the first, distribute the six relic swords and defeat the Gatekeepers on both sides. Use the Home-side stairs portal to return after crossing. Current community first-trial route.
The second trial spawns three Swordbearers. Preserve their swords for Gatekeepers, including the later central-doorway group. Control the recurring Wizards while finishing the Gatekeepers. Each trial lasts 90 seconds; success in the second awards the Catalyst to eligible weapon owners without another Crota kill. Current community second-trial route.
Tell the team before activating either plate. Assign sword users and directions while the timer is inactive, then use the on-screen completion message to confirm success. Keep the raid instance together between the two trials instead of switching checkpoints mid-route.
Cursebringer, Desperation and One for Thrall
What each current perk does

The current Catalyst perk is One for Thrall, rather than the launch-era Outlaw description. It asks for hits on three separate targets, while Cursebringer starts from a precision final blow and Desperation includes a reload. Those triggers should not be treated as interchangeable. Practice the sequence on a group you can see clearly: establish hits across three targets, secure the precision kill, then reload when you want Desperation. Watch your active effects rather than assuming every explosion starts every perk. This is preparation advice, not a measured damage ranking.

Which weapon advances the first Bottomless Pit step?
Husk of the Pit. The current objective tracks 100 Hive progress, with extra progress for its final blows in Crota鈥檚 End.
Why do I still need Crota after collecting 20 Essence?
Defeating Crota is the final separate step in the current ordered quest. Inspect it before continuing to farm materials.
Does the Catalyst need 35 more Essence?
No. Its threshold is 35 total, including the 20 for the weapon. From exactly 20, that leaves 15 more.
Can Essence alone unlock the Catalyst?
No. You also need the Catalyst item from both timed trials in the same raid instance.
Can a Crota checkpoint replace a full clear?
It can serve a required final-boss kill, but it does not establish completion of every encounter in order for a full-run reward.
How many weapon kills complete the Catalyst?
The current completion objective is Essence of the Oversoul collection, not a weapon-kill count.
Is the Catalyst still Outlaw?
No. The current Catalyst adds One for Thrall, triggered by hits on three separate targets.
Does a listed raid clear include the whole Exotic route?
No. The named clear is its stated raid objective; an unlisted guaranteed weapon, Essence amount or Catalyst trial is not included.
