Destiny 2 Khvostov Guide: Unlock & Catalyst
Unlock Legendary and Exotic Khvostov with 15 Encryption Bits, nine unique bosses and eight Visions. Check the current Catalyst, Attrition Orbs and 700 targets.
Khvostov has two Pale Heart rewards worth distinguishing: the Legendary Khvostov 7G-02 and the Exotic Khvostov 7G-0X. The first comes from the encryption route; the second follows the Motes and Visions route. This guide separates those objectives from the Exotic’s Catalyst upgrade.
Reviewed October 15, 2026. Current official item and Catalyst definitions verify the names, perks and upgrade requirement. Compact location guidance is attributed to illustrated player walkthroughs. The route below is for Destiny 2’s Pale Heart, rather than the Destiny 1 Rise of Iron quest.
Start With Pale Heart and Cyst Access
Finish the campaign, reach Micah-10 through Destined Heroes, then progress Convalescence and Alone in the Dark to unlock the Cysts. Sam Chandler’s illustrated access route.
Before exploring, check which weapon you already own and keep room for the route’s items. Mark the missing part of your progress: access, encryption, boss Motes, Visions or Catalyst. A completed Legendary weapon does not mean the separate Exotic collection is finished.
Collect the 15 Lost Encryption Bits
Encryption pickup sources
| Location | Pickup source | Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| The Landing | 3 region chests | 3 Bits |
| The Blooming | 3 region chests | 3 Bits |
| The Impasse | 3 region chests | 3 Bits |
| Six Cysts | 1 rubble pickup each | 6 Bits |
Use the region-chest markers on the destination map and search the actual rubble interaction inside each Cyst. The current Gilded Treasure record tracks nine region chests; One Man’s Trash… separately names six Cyst rubble pickups. Official collection records. Illustrated chest and rubble route.
Six Cyst Rubble Landmarks
Search each Cyst’s rubble
| Cyst | Compact landmark | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Sword Dance | Lower chitin-blocked doorway in the Ogre/crystal cavern. | Search rubble. |
| Moth-Infested Cavern | Cave beneath the early Ogre platform. | Search rubble. |
| Slayer | Post-boss tunnel, behind a tree root. | Search rubble. |
| Searing Light | Purple cave after the boss; look left. | Search rubble. |
| Aerial Ace | Past the lava tunnel, small cave to the right. | Search rubble. |
| Smothering Darkness | End-area chasm below the angled purple block. | Search rubble. |
Illustrated rubble locations for all six Cysts.
Cysts share three locations in pairs: Sword Dance / Moth-Infested Cavern, Searing Light / Slayer, and Smothering Darkness / Aerial Ace. After unlocking them, interact with the ghostly bird’s Activate Cyst prompt to switch the active mission. Leave the area and return before switching again. Illustrated Cyst switching instructions.
Read the bird’s mission name before entering. Searching the same cave under the wrong Cyst can make a correct-looking location misleading. Treat a rubble pickup as a separate interaction from simply finishing that Cyst.
Claim Legendary Khvostov 7G-02
The 15 Bits become a Lost Encryption Code. From The Impasse, enter the wall toward The Divide and open the golden chest on a crate. Illustrated wall-chest location.
The current Legendary Pale Heart item is named Khvostov 7G-02. A current completion record still uses “Legendary Khvostov 7G-0X” in its wording, which can cause confusion. Identify the actual item’s rarity and source rather than relying on that older record text. Current weapon and record definitions.
Collect Motes From the Nine Unique Overthrow Bosses
The Exotic route needs 17 Motes of Light: nine from unique Overthrow bosses and eight from Visions of the Traveler. Completing the set produces a Mote of Primordial Light. Check the inventory and the defeated boss’s surroundings for the reward. Pedro Peres’s firsthand Mote collection report.
Named boss checklist
| Overthrow area | Distinct bosses | Mote sources |
|---|---|---|
| The Landing | Ir Okmarr · Mharuk · Nolakh | 3 unique bosses |
| The Blooming | Kholon · Koftiks · Voxelos | 3 unique bosses |
| The Impasse | Araaxen · Rhaska · Rhuna | 3 unique bosses |
Keep the boss names alongside the runs you completed. A repeated activity clear is not evidence of a new unique boss. When checking a nearly complete route, compare the missing source rather than assuming every further clear is equally useful.
Find and Place All Eight Visions of the Traveler
Eight Vision landmarks
| Area | Compact landmark | Pickup |
|---|---|---|
| The Lost City | Waterfall beyond the rooftop route below Micah-10. | 1 Vision |
| The Landing | Waterfall immediately left of the landing point. | 1 Vision |
| The Refraction | Below the waterfall-side ledges, in a small opening. | 1 Vision |
| The Blooming | High in the old tree near the outer wall. | 1 Vision |
| The Impasse | On the white-red temple’s monolith. | 1 Vision |
| The Transgression | Beyond the final commune room, tucked left at the dead end. | 1 Vision |
| The Divide | Behind the antenna dish outside the mountaintop facility. | 1 Vision |
| The Seclusion / Slayer | Hole beyond the boss-room tunnel and tree roots. | 1 Vision |
The first seven landmarks follow ONE Esports’ illustrated route and screenshots by Shreyansh Katsura. Its final Seclusion location was still unfinished when written; the Slayer landmark here follows Sam Chandler’s completed illustrated route.
Place all eight Visions on the pedestals in the old Speaker area of the Lost City. With the Mote of Primordial Light, open the spawned chest to claim the Exotic. Firsthand chest and final-key explanation.
The Lost City destination contains this reward area. Keep it separate from the social Tower when following the route. A missing interaction prompt should lead you back to the required item and pedestal checks before you repeat unrelated activities.
If Encryption or Mote Progress Appears Stuck
Bungie’s June 20, 2024 support report warned that boss and collectible Triumphs could complete before their intended actions. It advised checking actual chest and rubble interactions, plus all Visions and unique bosses. That dated report does not establish that the same bugs are active today. Dated official acquisition troubleshooting.
- Check whether the inventory already contains the converted Code or Mote of Primordial Light.
- Compare the actual rubble and chest interactions with your notes, not only a completed-looking Triumph.
- Check the unique boss names and the Vision pedestals as separate lists.
- Record the exact missing item, last interaction and current inventory before reporting a reproducible problem.
Avoid deleting a required item or assuming that a launch-era workaround is still necessary. The most useful next step is to identify which part of the chain is missing. The dated support note explains why older screenshots and progress reports may disagree; it is not a new claim of a current account bug.
What the Exotic’s Perks Do
The Right Choice makes every seventh bullet ricochet. Eyes Up, Guardian strengthens upcoming ricochets after Orb pickups, improving damage and bounces. Shoot to Loot lets you collect Orbs by shooting them; shooting ammunition also reloads equipped weapons from reserves. Current official weapon inspection.
Build around collecting Orbs consistently and using the weapon where several targets are available. That is a practical fit for its stated effects, rather than a claim that it wins every damage comparison or remains best in every PvP mode.
Khvostov Catalyst: Attrition Orbs and 700 Targets
The current Catalyst exists and grants Attrition Orbs, which creates an Orb of Power through sustained damage. Its perk matches the normal Attrition Orbs effect; it is not the enhanced variant’s improved Orb description. The weapon’s Catalyst socket accepts this specific upgrade. Current Catalyst and socket data.
The current Catalyst acquisition record names Vanguard Ops, Gambit and Crucible. Its upgrade objective requires 700 defeated targets with the weapon. Obtain the Catalyst first, then progress that objective and inspect the completed upgrade; getting kills before acquiring it is not the acquisition method. Official Catalyst record and objective.
No exact drop rate or fixed number of activity clears is established here. Likewise, a vendor appearance from a previous weekend does not prove the same offer is available today. Check current eligible rewards before choosing where to spend your play time.
Khvostov and the Transcendent Collection Badge
Both Pale Heart weapon versions are entries in the collection badge used by Transcendent. The Catalyst is a separate upgrade, rather than a third badge weapon entry. Keep ownership of each version distinct from its extra upgrade progress.
For the destination’s other systems, use the Pale Heart Guide and Microcosm Guide. Those pages cover different goals and do not replace the Khvostov chest requirements.
Check the Exact Service Before Buying
The reviewed Destiny 2 catalogue does not currently list a named Khvostov weapon or Catalyst package. The Exotics service offers specific other weapon objectives; choosing one of them does not include this collection route or its Catalyst.
Khvostov FAQ
Weapon, quest and Catalyst questions
Which Khvostov is Legendary and which is Exotic?
The current Pale Heart Legendary is Khvostov 7G-02. The Exotic is Khvostov 7G-0X. A Common tutorial weapon also uses the 7G-02 name; rarity and source distinguish it.
How many Lost Encryption Bits do I need?
Fifteen: nine from region chests and six from Cyst rubble.
Can I replay an unlocked Cyst to find its Bit?
Yes. Use the ghostly bird to select the correct unlocked Cyst and search its rubble pickup.
Do nine random Overthrow completions finish the Motes?
You need the nine unique bosses, not merely nine clears. Keep a record of which named bosses you defeated.
What is the Mote of Primordial Light for?
It is the final key for the Exotic chest after the Mote collection is complete and all eight Visions are placed.
Does Khvostov have a Catalyst now?
Yes. The current Catalyst adds Attrition Orbs. Its acquisition record lists Vanguard Ops, Gambit and Crucible, and its completion objective is 700 defeated targets.
Do 700 kills unlock the Catalyst from nothing?
No. Acquiring the Catalyst and completing its 700-target upgrade objective are separate steps.
Does the current CFNBoost Exotics package include Khvostov?
No named Khvostov weapon or Catalyst option appears in the reviewed catalogue. Selecting a different weapon does not include this route.
