Overwatch Season 5 Midseason Patch: Buffs, Nerfs & Events
Every Overwatch Season 5 midseason change from November 3: Tank buffs, Doctrine, Genji and Ana nerfs, Taking Reign rewards and Competitive Drive dates.
The Overwatch Season 5 midseason patch went live on November 3, 2026. It buffs three Tanks, trims Doctrine, Genji, Ana and Vendetta, gives Reaper more health and opens the Taking Reign event that closes the year-long Reign of Talon story. Here is every balance change in plain numbers, what it means for ranked, and the event dates worth putting in your calendar before Season 5 ends.
What the November 3 midseason update changes
Season 5, A Grim Doctrine, started on October 6 with Doctrine as the new Support hero. The midseason update is the second half of that season. It does three things at once: a balance pass across all three roles, a new five-week story event, and a run of reward events that stack Loot Boxes, Competitive Points and cosmetics through early December.
Blizzard also improved its detection of gameplay sabotage: players who keep feeding, jump off the map or block their own team on purpose. If you report someone and action is taken, you now get a 'thank you' message in the Notification Hub. For ranked players that matters more than any skin, because a thrower in a placement match costs you real rating.
Season 5 midseason calendar
| Event | Dates | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Taking Reign | November 3 to December 7 | 24 reward tiers, free Epic Sigma recolor, premium path with Legendary Doomfist |
| Excavation Initiative | November 3 to December 7 | Weekly Loot Boxes for logging in and winning, Epic and Legendary boxes over several weeks |
| Overwatch x EVE Protocol | November 3 to November 17 | Collaboration skins for Widowmaker, D.Va, Freja, Vendetta and Soldier: 76 |
| Junkrat's Loot Hunt | November 19 or 20 to November 23 | Up to 9 Loot Boxes, no daily reset, Double XP all event |
| OWCS World Finals Cheer Rally | Challenges from late November to December 7 | Loot Boxes, Battle Pass XP and cosmetics, extra Cheer while watching December 2 to 6 |
| Competitive and Quick Play Drives | December 3 to December 7 | Up to 3,000 Competitive Points and a Signature, or 3,000 Legacy Weapon Points |
Two dates differ slightly between Blizzard's own announcements: Loot Hunt is listed as starting on November 19 in the patch notes and November 20 in the event post, and the Cheer Rally challenges start earlier in the patch notes. Plan around the later date and treat the earlier one as a bonus.
Tank changes: three buffs and two trims
This is the best patch for Tank players in a while. Junker Queen, Mauga and Ramattra all get stronger, while D.Mon and Winston lose some of the tools that made them frustrating to play against.
Tank balance changes
| Hero | Change | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Junker Queen | Base health 375 to 425 (500 in 6v6), Carnage cooldown 9 to 7 seconds, new Commanding Shout tracker | She survives the first engage even when her Wounds miss, and gets her main brawl tool back sooner |
| Mauga | Base armor 125 to 150, burning damage 15 to 20 | More durable in long fights and better rewarded for igniting squishies |
| Ramattra | Void Accelerator ammo 100 to 125 | More poke before you have to commit to Nemesis Form |
| D.Mon | Propulsors impact damage 15 to 0, Power Barrier recovery 0.2 to 0.3 seconds with a 0.25 second minimum, Overstrike perk lifesteal 150% to 125% | Less burst and less self-healing, and the barrier is easier to read |
| Winston | Revitalizing Barrier perk healing 35 to 30 per second | A small trim to balance his recent Barrier Projector cooldown reduction |
If you one-trick a Tank and were waiting for a reason to swap, Junker Queen is the clearest winner. The extra 50 health is a big share of her pool and lets her play more aggressively in brawl comps. Mauga players should feel the armor change most against Damage heroes with fast-firing weapons.
Damage changes: Genji and Vendetta down, Reaper up
Damage balance changes
| Hero | Change | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Genji | Deflect duration 2 to 1.5 seconds | Less safety when diving in, timing matters more |
| Vendetta | Overhead leap speed 11 to 9.5, initial swing delay 0.15 to 0.2 seconds, Raging Storm knockback 8 to 4 | Her combos are slower and easier to track |
| Reaper | Base health 275 to 300 | Compensates for the recent hitbox and projectile changes |
| Anran | Zhuque Fans damage 22 to 24, Inferno Rush loses knockback and multi-hits, Vermillion Ascent cast 1.2 to 1 second | Better at range, less burst up close |
| Shion | Execution starting spread 8.5 to 5.7 degrees, Satsuriku Spree cast 0.6 to 0.5 seconds | More reliable without a full charge, faster repositioning |
| Emre | Cyber Frag detonation 0.6 to 0.5 seconds, reticle setting fixes | Easier to finish low targets |
| Echo | Aerial Munitions perk now refills ammo | No forced reload after using the perk |
| Hanzo | Sonic Disruption perk no longer overrides Sombra's hacked health packs | A fix for a health pack interaction, not a power change |
Genji and Vendetta are the two nerfs that change matchups. Half a second less Deflect means fewer free resets against burst damage, and Vendetta's slower swing gives Tanks a moment to react. Reaper's 300 health puts him back into the brawl comps that Junker Queen and Mauga want to play.
Support changes: Doctrine and Ana nerfed, Brigitte and Illari buffed
Support balance changes
| Hero | Change | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Doctrine | Eternal Scepter recovery 0.6 to 0.65, Infused damage 90 to 80, Infused healing 120 to 110, Shrouded Momentum cooldown 8 to 10 seconds, Infuse cooldown 8 to 9 seconds | A third round of nerfs since launch, aimed at his healing output |
| Ana | Biotic Grenade explosion damage 90 to 60 | Keeps her recent self-healing but removes a lot of burst |
| Brigitte | Inspire internal cooldown 1.25 to 1 second, instant healing 12 to 15 | More steady healing in long fights |
| Illari | Solar Rifle full charge 0.65 to 0.575 seconds, Healing Pylon 40 to 50 per projectile | More damage and a stronger pylon |
| Jetpack Cat | Base health 225 to 200, Frenetic Flight acceleration 25 to 28, fuel regeneration 25% to 20% per second | Faster but more fragile, with less flight uptime |
| Sombra | Hotfix 12 to 10 seconds, Cyberspace Weaken 50% to 40%, EMP now overrides enemy health pack effects | Shorter uptime, but her ultimate wins the health pack fight |
| Baptiste | New tracker for allies inside Regenerative Burst | Quality of life only |
Doctrine is still playable, but you can no longer spam Infuse into every fight. Treat it as a once-per-fight decision and save Shrouded Momentum for escapes, because the 10 second cooldown punishes using it to reposition. Our Doctrine guide covers his full kit and how to pick perks; the numbers above replace the older ones there.
Ana's grenade change is the one most players will notice. Sixty damage still punishes a stacked team, but the old grenade-plus-shot burst on a squishy is gone. Brigitte and Illari both gain from the slower Ana and Doctrine, so expect them more often in your games.
Who wins and who loses in ranked
Stronger after the patch:
- Junker Queen: more health and a faster Carnage make her the strongest pick-up for brawl Tanks
- Mauga and Reaper: both get tankier and fit the same close-range comps
- Brigitte and Illari: steadier healing and damage while Ana and Doctrine are weaker
- Ramattra: extra poke ammo helps on maps with long sightlines
Weaker after the patch:
- Doctrine: lower Infuse values and longer cooldowns hit his healing ceiling
- Genji and Vendetta: less safety and slower combos when diving
- Ana: the grenade no longer doubles as a burst tool
- D.Mon and Jetpack Cat: less burst, less health or less uptime
None of this changes how placements or ranks work. Competitive still unlocks the same way and the ranked ladder carries on through the season. What changes is which heroes are comfortable in your games, so it is worth a few Quick Play matches on any hero you play that was touched before you queue ranked again. Our Overwatch competitive guide explains placements, role queues and rank goals if you are planning a climb.
Stadium changes in the same patch
Stadium got its own small pass. Winston's Tesla Field power drops to 30 damage per second, Cassidy's Barrage Blastin' and Silver Bullet powers hit harder, Genji's Wyrm's Maw stacks rise to 15%, Sojourn's Hard Stuck penalty shrinks, and Vendetta's Apex Bloodlust lifesteal falls to 3% while Rampant Onslaught now needs three eliminations per stack. Blizzard also confirmed that grouping limits in Stadium Ranked stay removed after they were turned on by mistake.
Taking Reign: event pass and rewards
Taking Reign is the finale of the Reign of Talon story, with Doomfist and Overwatch heading to Rialto to deal with Vendetta. The event pass has 24 tiers. The free path ends with an Epic Sigma skin recolor, and the premium path costs 1,000 Overwatch Coins and adds the Legendary Resurgence Doomfist skin and a Legendary weapon skin for Vendetta.
The useful detail: once you buy the premium pass you can finish it at any time, including in Season 6. If you only want the free Sigma recolor, play the event challenges before December 7 and you are done. Mythic Necrotic Knight Roadhog also arrived on November 3 with four levels of customization, from helmet options to new hook effects.
Competitive Drives and Loot Box events
Drives come back on December 3 to 7 with two separate tracks. Competitive Drives pay up to 3,000 Competitive Points plus a Signature, and Quick Play Drives pay up to 3,000 Legacy Weapon Points. You can play both in the same week. Reaching the fourth checkpoint also lets you equip Signatures you earned in earlier seasons, and the fourth checkpoint of the latest Team Drive unlocks the same choice for Player Card Frames.
- Excavation Initiative (November 3 to December 7): log in and win to complete each week's digs, and keep going across several weeks for Epic and Legendary Loot Boxes.
- Junkrat's Loot Hunt (November 19 to 23): five games per challenge, up to nine times, with no daily reset and Double XP throughout. The best weekend of the season to level a Battle Pass.
- OWCS World Finals Cheer Rally: challenges run until December 7, and watching the World Finals broadcasts on December 2 to 6 with a linked account adds extra Cheer.
If your goal is Competitive Points for golden or Legacy weapons, the December Drive is the biggest single source this season. Plan your ranked wins for that week rather than spreading them thin across November.
How to plan the rest of Season 5
- Retest every hero you play that was changed on November 3 in Quick Play before your next ranked session.
- If you play Tank, try Junker Queen or Mauga in brawl comps while their buffs are fresh.
- Finish the free Taking Reign path before December 7, and buy the premium pass only if you want the Doomfist skin, since it does not expire.
- Save a block of games for Junkrat's Loot Hunt on November 19 to 23 to use the Double XP.
- Keep time free on December 3 to 7 for Competitive Drives if you are collecting Competitive Points.
