Overwatch Doctrine Guide: Abilities, Perks and Tips
Overwatch Doctrine guide: what each ability and Infused effect does, which perks to pick, the Season 5 nerfs so far and how to play and counter the new support.
Overwatch Doctrine is the Support hero who arrived with Season 5: A Grim Doctrine on 6 October 2026. He heals and damages with one mid-range weapon, sends drones onto allies for attack speed and healing, and uses Infuse to add a stronger effect to his next ability. This guide explains every ability and Infused effect, which perks to pick, what the two rounds of nerfs changed and how we would actually play him in ranked.
Who Doctrine is and when he arrived
Doctrine went live on 6 October 2026 as the headline hero of Season 5, after a trial weekend in September. Blizzard’s hero page describes him as a cyberneticist turned supervillain who uses a fleet of life-draining drones, and lists his base as Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, which is also the new Escort map added this season.
He shares the Support pool with a very different newcomer: Season 5 also moved Sombra from Damage to Support (Tactician subrole) with healing tools and a new Weaken debuff. If you queue Support this season, expect to see both often, and expect both to be tuned again. You can read the full notes on Blizzard’s patch notes page.
Doctrine abilities and Infused effects
Every basic ability except the ultimate has an Infused version. You press Infuse first, then the next ability you use gets the stronger effect. The table uses Blizzard’s own descriptions.
Doctrine ability kit (Blizzard hero page)
| Ability | Normal effect | Infused effect |
|---|---|---|
| Eternal Scepter (weapon) | Mid-range weapon that heals allies and damages enemies. | Fires a larger piercing blast. |
| Infuse | Adds a powerful effect to your next ability. | Not applicable: this is the switch itself. |
| Invigorating Drones | Deploys drones to an ally, granting attack speed and healing. | Also deploys drones to yourself. |
| Shrouded Momentum | Rush horizontally with damage reduction. | Gain free-flight. |
| Deliverance (ultimate) | Launches a drone swarm that reduces enemy maximum health and grants allies overhealth. | No Infused version listed. |
Two numbers from the patch notes matter in practice: Eternal Scepter now deals and heals 55 per hit, and Invigorating Drones give 30% attack speed for 5 seconds. That makes the drones a short, burst-style buff you time with a teammate’s fight, not something you keep on a tank all the time.
Infuse: what to empower and when
Infuse is the hero. Because only the next ability gets the upgrade, you are always choosing between three plans. This is how we think about it:
- Infused Scepter for picks and pressure. The larger piercing blast can hit more than one target in a line. Use it when the enemy front line stacks in a doorway or when a flanker is low and you need a finishing shot. With the Sanguine Siphon perk it also heals you.
- Infused Drones when you are the target. Normal drones go on one ally. Infused drones also land on you, so both you and your carry get attack speed and healing. It is the best answer when a dive is coming and you want to win the duel instead of running.
- Infused Momentum to escape or reposition high. The normal rush is horizontal only. Infused, it gives free-flight, which turns it into a vertical escape or a way to reach high ground. Save one Infuse for this if your team has no other way to peel for you.
- Do not waste it on a random cast. An Infused ability used with no target in range is a full cooldown lost. Infuse right before the fight starts, not mid-retreat.
Doctrine perks: which to pick
Perks unlock during the match: a Minor perk at level 2 and a Major perk at level 3. Blizzard lists these four options:
Doctrine perks (Blizzard hero page)
| Perk | Tier | Effect | When we pick it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saving Grace | Minor (level 2) | Invigorating Drones heal for 40 health when applied. | Default for most games: instant healing on the drone target saves dived teammates. |
| Sanguine Siphon | Minor (level 2) | Heal for 50% of damage dealt with Infused Eternal Scepter. | When you are playing aggressive angles and Infusing your weapon most of the time. |
| Transfusion | Major (level 3) | Infuse cooldown is reduced by damage and healing dealt. | Long brawls where you are always shooting; note its conversion rate was halved at launch. |
| Cost of Life | Major (level 3) | Sacrifice 25 maximum health; Eternal Scepter healing increased by 20%. | When your team protects you well and raw healing is the bottleneck. |
Transfusion took a 50% cut to its damage and healing conversion rate in the launch notes, so it is weaker than it looked during the trial weekend. Cost of Life is the safer Major perk when you are rarely the one being dived; when you are, the lost health hurts.
Season 5 nerfs so far
Blizzard said Doctrine was overperforming relative to other supports in the trial weekend and adjusted him at launch, then again in the 13 October hotfix. The 20 October update was a bug fix with no Doctrine balance changes.
Doctrine balance changes (Blizzard patch notes)
| Date | Change | Before | After |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 Oct 2026 | Ultimate cost | Base | Increased by 8% |
| 6 Oct 2026 | Transfusion conversion rate | Base | Reduced by 50% |
| 6 Oct 2026 | Invigorating Drones attack speed | 35% | 30% |
| 6 Oct 2026 | Shrouded Momentum cooldown | 7 s | 8 s |
| 6 Oct 2026 | Shrouded Momentum damage reduction | 50% | 40%, and no more critical hit immunity |
| 6 Oct 2026 | Deliverance drone fire rate | 4 | 5 |
| 6 Oct 2026 | Deliverance overhealth and debuff duration | 8 s | 6 s |
| 6 Oct 2026 | Deliverance decay duration | 5 s | 4 s |
| 13 Oct 2026 | Eternal Scepter damage and healing | 60 | 55 |
| 13 Oct 2026 | Invigorating Drones duration | 6 s | 5 s |
The practical result: Deliverance now applies its effects faster but for a shorter time, so use it at the start of a committed fight rather than as a slow, defensive cushion. Shrouded Momentum no longer blocks headshots, so it is a repositioning tool, not a way to survive a sniper.
How to play Doctrine in ranked
- Play mid-range behind your main tank. Eternal Scepter is a mid-range weapon. Stand where you can both heal the front line and shoot whoever steps forward to contest it.
- Pair drones with your best damage player. Attack speed is worth most on a hero whose damage comes from fire rate. Call it out: a 5-second buff should start when your teammate swings, not before.
- Keep Shrouded Momentum for the dive. At 8 seconds, it is your only escape. Spending it to walk to the fight leaves you exposed for the next one.
- Open fights with Deliverance. Lowering enemy maximum health while your team has overhealth turns an even fight into a winning one. Combine it with your tank’s engage, not after half your team is dead.
- Pick the perk for the match, not by habit. Saving Grace and Cost of Life suit protected backlines; Sanguine Siphon fits a dueling style.
How to counter Doctrine
- Punish the rush with headshots. Since launch, Shrouded Momentum no longer gives critical hit immunity and only reduces damage by 40%. Hitscan heroes can still burst him mid-dash.
- Watch for the Infuse. If he flies up with free-flight, his Infuse is gone. That is the moment to dive him before it comes back.
- Do not fight inside Deliverance. Reduced maximum health means your healers cannot top you up. Back off for the 6-second window and re-engage when the overhealth on his team has decayed.
- Kill the drone target first. The buffed ally has more attack speed for a few seconds; trade cooldowns until the 5-second buff ends instead of taking an even duel during it.
Doctrine in Competitive: what to check
Blizzard’s Season 5 notes do not mention a Competitive restriction for Doctrine, and the notes confirm he is playable in the Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games event, which runs for four weeks from launch. Check the hero select screen in your Competitive queue before planning a one-trick climb. Season 5 also changed the Top 500 leaderboard to sort by Rank and removed the Heat Bonus; our Overwatch competitive guide covers placements, roles and those ranked changes in detail.
New heroes usually get more balance passes in their first season, so recheck this page and Doctrine’s official hero page after the next patch. We will update the numbers here when Blizzard changes them.

Frequently Asked Questions
When was Doctrine released in Overwatch?
Doctrine went live on 6 October 2026 with Season 5: A Grim Doctrine, after a trial weekend in September 2026.
What role is Doctrine in Overwatch?
Doctrine is a Support hero in the Survivor subrole. He heals and damages with his Eternal Scepter, buffs allies with Invigorating Drones and uses the Deliverance ultimate to lower enemy maximum health and give allies overhealth.
What does Doctrine’s Infuse do?
Infuse adds a stronger effect to his next ability. An Infused Eternal Scepter fires a larger piercing blast, Infused Invigorating Drones also land on Doctrine himself, and Infused Shrouded Momentum gives free-flight instead of a horizontal rush.
Was Doctrine nerfed?
Yes, twice. The 6 October 2026 launch notes raised his ultimate cost by 8%, cut drone attack speed from 35% to 30%, raised the Shrouded Momentum cooldown from 7 to 8 seconds and shortened Deliverance. The 13 October hotfix lowered Eternal Scepter damage and healing from 60 to 55 and Invigorating Drones duration from 6 to 5 seconds.
What are the best perks for Doctrine?
For most games we pick Saving Grace (drones heal 40 health when applied) as the Minor perk. For the Major perk, Cost of Life (20% more Scepter healing for 25 maximum health) suits a protected backline, while Transfusion lowers the Infuse cooldown from damage and healing but was halved in strength at launch.
Can I play Doctrine in Competitive?
Blizzard’s Season 5 patch notes do not list a Competitive restriction for Doctrine. Check the hero select screen in your Competitive queue, because availability can change with hotfixes.
