What the Fractured Archive is

The Fractured Archive follows Chambers of Xeric, Theatre of Blood and Tombs of Amascut, and Jagex calls it the toughest raid yet. It is members only. The entrance is a cliff face near the Ancient Guthixian Temple entrance, and your first attempt to enter the lobby starts a short Fractured Archive miniquest.

The lobby has everything you need between runs: a bank chest, a Grouping Board on the east side to form or join parties (and allow or block spectators), a Strategy Board on the west side to watch other groups, the Record Keeper, and Ascension rocks that yield Ascension shards. If you leave before opening your reward chest, your loot waits in the lobby's loot wheelbarrow.

Players jumped in fast. By 28 October Jagex counted over 250,000 completions, more than 1 million groups created and almost 4 million deaths, which tells you how punishing the first week was.

How to unlock it: While Guthix Sleeps

There is no separate combat or skill gate on the raid. The gate is While Guthix Sleeps, a Grandmaster quest released in July 2024 with a full prerequisite chain of more than 40 quests, including Dream Mentor, Lunar Diplomacy, The Path of Glouphrie, Defender of Varrock and Temple of the Eye. If the quest is already done, you can walk straight to the entrance.

Two account notes from Jagex's launch post: restricted (limited) accounts could not take part at release, and Ultimate Ironmen with items stored at Pete Kayer cannot enter until they reclaim them.

Team size and scaling

Jagex lists the raid at 2 to 8 players with 3 to 5 recommended. The OSRS Wiki records that you can also enter solo, but boss hitpoints scale with team size and a solo player is scaled as if there were two, so solo is the hardest way to play it.

Fractured Archive team sizes

Team sizeWhat Jagex saysOur take
SoloVery challenging (scaled as a duo)Only after many team clears
DuoTough but manageableBoth players need to know every room
3 to 5Recommended sizeBest for learning the bosses
6 to 8Maximum teamMore hands for adds, but every death now weighs on the group's loot

Boss route: 5 of 8 bosses per run

A run always opens with the Archive Guardian and ends with Ocellus. In between you pick one boss from each of three pairs, returning to a central room after every fight. Jagex designed each pair to give the same contribution points and a similar difficulty, so your choice does not change your unique chances.

Fractured Archive boss order

StageBoss optionsNotes
1Archive GuardianAlways first. Defence drain capped at 60%
2Ezekiel or Bork and the SmorksSame points either way. Smorks have no Defence cap
3Moia or Dreadnoth the JelliedThe Quartermaster arrives after this stage. Dreadnoth has no Defence cap
4Xarth or the Dagon'hai TrioThe Trio (an Elder with monks) has no Defence cap
5OcellusFinal boss with several phases. The Blade appears in phase 2

Because the points are equal, pick the room your team clears with the fewest deaths. The wiki's first-week kill counts show most groups chose Bork and the Smorks over Ezekiel and Dreadnoth over Moia. Note the caps: since 20 October, Defence reduction stops at 60% on the Archive Guardian, Bork, Ezekiel, Moia, Xarth and Ocellus, and since 28 October offensive stat reduction is capped at 50% on Ocellus, Xarth and Dreadnoth.

Deaths, wipes and supplies

  • Team wipes end the run. You are removed and a gravestone is placed outside the entrance, as in Theatre of Blood.
  • Reclaim fees: up to 500,000 coins (OSRS Wiki), reduced by 75% until you have at least five completions.
  • Not a safe death: Hardcore Ironmen and Hardcore Group Ironmen lose their status if they die inside.
  • Supplies: Jagex's preview described a points-based resupply inside the raid, no Overload-style potion and no banking during a run.
  • Disconnects: since the 22 October hotfix you keep your food and potions if you disconnect; since 28 October parties no longer disband after a wipe and you are not kicked for relogging.
  • Spectating: dead players can follow teammates' view through the party orbs, and the party can switch this off.

The 28 October update also changed contribution: individual deaths are now less punishing, while team deaths have a bigger effect on the group's unique rate. Damage to adds counts toward room contribution up to a cap, so clearing adds is not wasted time.

Rewards and uniques

After Ocellus, The Blade takes you to a reward room. Jagex said regular loot is meant to sit just below Theatre of Blood. Unique rates have not been published yet.

What changed since launch (20–28 October)

  • 20 October hotfix: the 60% Defence reduction caps were added to six bosses, and Ocellus no longer restores Defence between quadrants in phase 3.
  • First-week hotfixes: fixes for Archive Guardian and Ocellus disappearing between phases, Ezekiel dodge rolls, and a Zorya's tome special attack exploit.
  • 28 October: 50% offensive stat cap on Ocellus, Xarth and Dreadnoth; clearer Ocellus tank selection (the party leader is focused first, with a tank-only sound and chat message); a more forgiving Blade in Ocellus phase 2; players under the same Moia Undead Binder now take one hit instead of one per player.
  • 28 October, items: the Rondache now applies its flat reduction after protection prayers, the Ascension shard GE limit rose from 100 to 30,000, and Orion now counts in the All Pets collection log.
  • Still coming: a fix that delays the reward chest sparkles, full loot and contribution details, and Practice Mode.

How to prepare for your first clear

This is our own advice from running older raids, not an official recommendation.

  1. Finish While Guthix Sleeps early. For most accounts the quest chain takes longer than learning the raid.
  2. Build raid habits first. Clears of Chambers of Xeric, Theatre of Blood or Tombs of Amascut teach team calls, resupply timing and tanking, and they fund your gear.
  3. Watch before you enter. Use the Strategy Board to spectate a few good teams, then join a 3 to 5 player learner group from the Grouping Board.
  4. Risk only what you can replace. A wipe costs the run and a reclaim fee, but fees are cut by 75% until your fifth clear, so your first runs are the cheapest time to learn.
  5. Pick rooms for consistency. Each pair is worth the same points, so choose the boss your team dies to least.
  6. Hardcore accounts should wait. The raid is not a safe death; if you want to drill Ocellus without risk, wait for Practice Mode.
