OSRS Progression Guide: Skills, Quests & Boss Readiness
Plan Old School RuneScape progression around useful skill targets, quest unlocks and boss readiness. Compare account modes, raid goals and defined service packages.
Old School RuneScape progression is easier to plan when you name the activity you want to unlock. A higher skill level, a finished quest, a boss kill and a permanent reward are different outcomes. This guide helps new and returning players find the missing step, build a practical training plan and choose assistance only when its scope matches that step.
Check Your Account Before Choosing a Route
Regular accounts can trade; Ironman accounts cannot use normal player trading or the Grand Exchange. Group Ironman has its own group-sharing rules. Plan around the mode you actually play. Do not use a Regular-account shopping list for a restricted character or assume that an Ironman option covers every special mode. Jagex’s account-mode and interface guide.
The Activity Adviser suggests quests using your stats and progress. Your Quest Journal shows the state of an individual quest, while the skill guide shows level unlocks. Use those screens to identify what you can do now. For a returning account, check completed quests and existing rewards before following a fresh-account route.
Sailing is now a released members’ skill. An older guide can still contain useful training ideas while omitting newer content. Treat an old “all skills” checklist as a starting point to verify, not a complete current account plan. Jagex’s Sailing page.
Choose the outcome first
| Your goal | Check on your character | Plan the missing step |
|---|---|---|
| Unlock an activity | Required quest, skills and membership. | Work through the unmet prerequisite before arranging a clear. |
| Reach a skill milestone | The named skill and current level. | Choose a target that unlocks something you intend to use. |
| Learn a boss | Access, supplies and a repeatable setup. | Practice one mechanic before adding difficulty. |
| Earn a cape or reward | The exact challenge and account build. | Choose the reward itself, not an unrelated kill-count package. |
| Finish a combat task | The precise task, mode and conditions. | Check that its completion condition matches your goal. |
Use Quests to Give Skill Training a Purpose
Start with one destination, then work backwards. Open its quest and list the missing earlier quests, skills and items. Train the requirements you are actually short of, finish the next eligible quest, and check the journal again. This keeps a long-term goal manageable without turning it into a demand to train every skill to 99 first.
Song of the Elves unlocks Prifddinas, including access to the Gauntlet and Zalcano. That makes it a useful example of a quest-led account goal: getting the quest done and learning the activity afterwards are separate stages. Jagex’s Song of the Elves release notes.
Our OSRS Quests service covers one named quest, with Regular and Ironman choices. The quest’s prerequisites must already be met; missing skill training, earlier quests and required items are not bundled into every selection. Choose the exact title: Dragon Slayer I and II, for example, are different orders. A boss-fight-only package should not be mistaken for completing its entire quest.
Train the Skill That Removes Your Next Blocker
Before a training session, write down the unlock you want and the skill that holds it back. A quest requirement, equipment requirement and personal level goal can suggest different targets. Keep training costs and supplies in the plan, and check which other requirements remain once that level is reached.
For combat practice, make your controls familiar before paying for stronger gear. Protect from Magic unlocks at 37 Prayer, Protect from Missiles at 40, and Protect from Melee at 43. Having a prayer available and switching to it at the right moment are separate skills. Practice opening your inventory and Prayer tabs without losing track of movement.
The OSRS Skill Leveling service sells a single named skill in level 1–50, 1–70 or 1–99 packages. These are full stated ranges, not a slider that deducts levels you already have. Regular and Ironman packages are separate; Hitpoints is not sold as a standalone choice here. Training one stat does not include every combat skill, a quest completion or the item unlocked by that level.
Build Bossing Experience Before Chasing Difficult Clears
Scurrius in Varrock Sewers was designed as a mid-level introduction to PvM, with solo or group play, three attack styles and an emphasis on combat experience. Jagex aimed it at roughly level-60 players and recommended protection prayers. This is an option to practise yourself, rather than a service promised by our catalogue. Jagex’s Scurrius introduction.
- Choose one mechanic to improve: recognizing an attack, changing Prayer or moving away from danger.
- Use a repeatable inventory so you can compare attempts rather than changing everything at once.
- After a failed attempt, name the cause before spending more supplies.
- Move to harder content when your routine becomes reliable, rather than judging readiness by one lucky clear.
Check the difference between access requirements and a service’s preparation rules. Our OSRS Bossing & Gauntlet service offers named boss kill counts, and Normal or Corrupted Gauntlet packs. Its Gauntlet choices require a Regular account, Song of the Elves access, combat and Magic skills of at least 85 and Prayer of at least 77. Those are the service’s conditions, not a claim that the game demands those levels simply to enter. Kills and clears do not guarantee a rare drop.
Prepare for Raids With a Specific Difficulty in Mind
Tombs of Amascut requires Beneath Cursed Sands. Its quest chain includes 62 Agility, 55 Crafting and 55 Firemaking. Invocations set the raid level: 0–149 is Entry, 150–299 Normal, and 300+ Expert. Use the current in-game quest and raid screens to check your own eligibility and selected modifiers. Jagex’s Tombs of Amascut guide.
For your first practice runs, agree on a difficulty the group can learn together. Talk through responsibilities and supplies, then change one source of difficulty at a time. Completing the access quest does not mean your equipment, mechanics and team coordination are already ready for a high-invocation clear.
Our OSRS Raids packages cover Chambers of Xeric, Theatre of Blood and Tombs of Amascut, with a chosen mode and 1, 5 or 10 runs. The published ToA choices start at 200 Invocation; they are not Entry-mode learning sessions. These packages are for Regular accounts with max combat stats and suitable high-end gear. Piloted and group Self-play are distinct choices, with Self-play adding 20% to the Piloted package. A run count does not promise a purple chest, cosmetic kit or pet.
Separate Capes, Combat Tasks and Minigame Rewards
If your goal is a Fire Cape, Infernal Cape or Dizana’s Quiver, use Capes & Quiver and read the selected account-build and equipment package. These are Piloted solo-challenge completions. A named Combat Achievement is a different objective, even if it takes place in the same encounter. Our Combat Achievements offer covers its selected task or explicitly listed bundle; it does not promise an entire reward tier or all Achievement Diaries.
For OSRS Minigames, read the unit before comparing packages. Tempoross kills and reward permits measure different things. Likewise, an activity-point target, a role level and named equipment are separate outcomes. Pick the reward named in the package if that is what you need; a random-reward count is not a guarantee of a particular collection-log entry.
A completion is only useful when it matches the goal
| What you select | What to verify | What it does not imply |
|---|---|---|
| One named quest | Requirements are ready and the title is correct. | All earlier quests or the Quest Cape. |
| One skill range | Skill, full range and account mode. | A complete account build or every related unlock. |
| Boss or raid runs | Encounter, difficulty, count and access. | A guaranteed unique drop or every combat task. |
| Cape or Quiver | Reward, account build and equipment scope. | A different cape, a pet or training missing levels. |
| Minigame target | Points, permits, kills, role or named reward. | Interchangeable units or every reward from the activity. |
Use a Short, Repeatable Account Plan
Keep three goals at most: one unlock, one training target and one activity you enjoy. For example, work through a missing quest prerequisite, train the relevant skill, then return to a familiar encounter to practise. At the end of the session, note what changed and choose the next eligible step. You can do this in your own notes; no extra tool or download is needed.
For any service, compare your current character with the complete package description. Check the account mode, included work and the preparation you must already have. The Old School RuneScape catalogue shows the total in your selected display currency. Choose the outcome you want to receive rather than assuming that a cheaper count-only package includes a separate unlock or reward.
What Is Current on October 15, 2026?
Jagex’s October 14 update says The Fractured Archive is planned to open on October 20, with a target time of 11:00 UTC. That is an announced future release, not live content at this review date. The three raids described in our current service are the published choices; this guide does not advertise an Archive completion package. Read the dated Jagex update.
OSRS Progression Questions
Choose your next milestone
Should I train everything to 99 before questing?
No. Pick a useful quest or activity and train the missing requirements for that goal. A full maxing plan is a different commitment.
Does a named quest package include its prerequisites?
No. The published quest service expects required levels, earlier quests and items to be ready. Check your journal before ordering.
Do the skill packages deduct levels I already trained?
No. The published packages cover their stated level-1 starting range and selected target. They do not use a custom current-level deduction.
Is 200 Invocation ToA an Entry-mode package?
No. Entry Mode is below 150 Raid Level. A 200-Invo selection is Normal Mode.
Does a boss-kill package guarantee a pet or rare item?
No. A kill-count order covers its named completions. Select an explicitly named reward package only when that reward is the listed goal.
Is the Fractured Archive already available?
Not as of this October 15 review. Jagex has announced October 20 as its planned release; confirm the live launch update before planning a run.
