Destiny 2 Root of Nightmares Guide: Encounters & Rewards

Plan Root of Nightmares runners, planet swaps and Nezarec Refuge. Check current raid rewards and compare full-clear, last-boss, Master and Flawless goals.

Game:Destiny 2GuidesPublished: By CFNBoost
Three Guardians ascend pale organic alien roots entwined through a black pyramid raid, pink and gold cosmic light.

Root of Nightmares asks a fireteam to connect node chains, exchange planets and keep Nezarec away from its runners. Agree who owns each task before starting. A fast damage loadout helps only after the group has opened the damage phase and survived the mechanics that lead into it.

Reviewed October 14, 2026. Encounter summaries below cross-check player walkthroughs; current reward and access rules use Bungie publications. This is an original preparation guide, not a record of CFNBoost PRO gameplay, a speedrun route or an exhaustive secret-chest walkthrough.

Root of Nightmares: Four Encounters at a Glance

A compact route and role plan

EncounterMain objectiveAssignment to agree
CataclysmComplete the Light-node chains before the wipe timer expires.Runner, backup and timer-control group.
ScissionComplete paired node chains across three floors.A runner and support players for each network.
MacrocosmSort planets and prepare the matching damage plates.Four platform readers and two central support players.
NezarecFinish both chains, handle Hatred and use the required Refuge.Light runner, Dark runner, gaze control and support.

Use the names on the HUD for buffs and protection. Agree room directions and planet callouts at the rally flag, especially when a replacement player joins. Make the backup responsibility explicit so a runner’s death does not leave everyone waiting for someone else.

Before Launch: Choose the Goal and Check Access

Decide whether you want a first full clear, a last-boss completion, a Master attempt or a Flawless objective. Secret chests, a Deepsight puzzle, named Challenges and title records add separate tasks; a boss checkpoint is not automatically a route through them all.

Bungie states that specific raid and dungeon access still requires the corresponding expansion or key. Check the live raid card for access, difficulty and modifiers rather than using historical launch Power advice. Current raid-access support guidance.

  1. Name the run goal and confirm that everyone can launch the selected activity.
  2. Assign mechanics, a backup and one clear caller before the first attempt.
  3. Prepare weapons for the assigned enemies and a defensive option you can use while moving.
  4. If including a puzzle or secret, assign its recorder and agree where the team will stop.

Node Chains: Refresh Only After the Link

Field of Light and Flux of Darkness let their carriers activate matching destination nodes. Acquire the buff in the active aura, follow its beam, link the destination, then refresh. A mistimed aura shot can disrupt the chain. Community node-chain reference.

A simple first-clear method is to let one designated runner call each completed link. Other players should request a refresh rather than shoot the aura independently. If a link fails, name the failed step and check the current aura and buff before trying to make up lost time.

Cataclysm: Runner Progress and Timer Control

Cataclysm combines four Light-node chains with Sweeping Terror. Defeat the paired shielded Psions to spawn a Tormentor; defeating it extends the wipe timer. A completed chain briefly halts the pressure before the next section. Community Cataclysm explanation.

  1. The runner follows the active beam and calls each completed link.
  2. Support finds the shielded Psions and secures the Tormentor spawn.
  3. The combat group defeats the Tormentor before Sweeping Terror expires.
  4. Regroup when a chain completes, identify the next aura and repeat.

Keep the timer caller separate from the runner’s route calls when possible. Before an attempt, decide who switches to the Tormentor and who continues covering the runner. If the group repeatedly loses to the timer, identify whether the delay is in finding the Psions, defeating the Tormentor or linking nodes.

Scission: Two Networks and Three Floors

Scission splits the team into two groups of three, each with a runner crossing the chasm and support holding a side. Finish both chains before Imminent Expulsion, clear the required end-of-floor enemies and move upward. Some protected enemies require the matching buff. Original player Scission walkthrough.

  1. Assign one runner to Light and one to Dark; agree each home side.
  2. Receive the matching buff together when support needs it, then let the runner follow the destination.
  3. Use the launchers from a controlled position and call a missed crossing immediately.
  4. After both networks finish, clear the required enemies, regroup and advance to the next floor.

Practice the crossing before trying to save seconds with a movement trick. If a runner falls, the backup should take over deliberately; several players improvising on the same network can make the problem harder to recover. Do not leave a floor while a teammate is still identifying the next route.

Macrocosm: Planets, Partners and Damage Plates

Four platform players defeat their Lieutenants to read planet affinities. In the ordinary encounter, move the out-of-place planets so Light is on the left and Dark on the right. Exchange with the opposite partner, then read and match the three central planets to prepare damage. Player Macrocosm walkthrough.

  1. Choose one room orientation and a unique name for each platform and planet position.
  2. Each reader identifies the odd planet and confirms the exchange with their partner.
  3. After the side arrangement resolves, match the revealed central affinities.
  4. Use a plate matching the boss’s current affinity to damage, then move when immunity returns.

A used damage plate cannot simply be reused in the same phase. Save ammunition for the remaining segments rather than emptying every weapon during the first opening. Damage-plate reference.

Avoid calls that contain only a number unless everyone has agreed the same numbering scheme. A useful original convention is “near-left, wall planet” or another unambiguous platform-plus-position name. Before swapping, have the partner repeat the destination so the error is caught before both players cross.

Nezarec: Runners, Hatred and Refuge

Complete the Light and Dark chains while a gaze player handles Nezarec’s chest weak point and Hatred. Shoulder breaks reveal the needed Refuge. Both completed networks open damage; if they will not finish before the pulse, make the called protection first. Community Nezarec walkthrough reviewed August 2026.

Match the protection name to the shoulder tell

Required RefugeBuff to carryCompleted node to shoot
Darkness’s RefugeField of LightA Dark node that is not the active aura.
Light’s RefugeFlux of DarknessA Light node that is not the active aura.

Enter the field and check the Refuge name on your HUD. Protection against the wipe pulse does not protect you from ordinary attacks, slams or knockback. Refuge conditions.

  1. Assign both runners, a gaze player and the person who confirms Refuge.
  2. Call the shoulder tell by protection name and build it if the chain pace requires it.
  3. Keep Nezarec away from runner routes and confirm the group has protection before the pulse.
  4. When damage opens, regroup at the agreed position; return to roles at immunity and reserve damage for final stand.

Choose a damage position the entire team can identify. If someone is missing protection, report that before the pulse instead of assuming proximity is enough. A first-clear team benefits from a planned Refuge call more than an unannounced attempt to skip the mechanic.

Between Encounters and Optional Objectives

Traversal can also involve protection fields. Stay with the caller and wait for teammates who are learning the route. If the group includes a Deepsight puzzle, record its opening Light/Dark sequence and follow it through the same raid instance. Community puzzle and traversal reference.

Separate the objective you are paying for from optional route tasks. Hidden chests, lore, a specific Challenge and a complete title are different requests. This page summarizes the ordinary encounters; it does not supply every puzzle-room location or promise that an optional objective is included in a clear package.

Current Raid Rewards: Featured Status Matters

Bungie’s released June reward framework updates older raids with tiered armor and refreshed craftable weapons. Featured and non-featured raids have different reward behavior. Released raid-reward framework.

Read the live raid card alongside these published rules

Activity statePublished reward framework
Featured StandardFarmable Deepsight weapons or Tier 5 armor from encounters and Challenges.
Featured MasterThe Standard family, plus Adept weapons from Challenges.
Featured Director Challenge / hidden chestsWeekly lockout applies to these specified rewards.
Non-featured StandardChance for Deepsight weapons and Tier 3 armor.
Non-featured Master / Challenges / Deepsight chestDeepsight weapons and Tier 5 armor.

A Master clear is a difficulty objective, not an automatic completion of every named Challenge. The published framework also distinguishes a weekly Deepsight vendor purchase from encounter rewards. Do not carry an old blanket “everything once per week” rule into a featured farming plan.

The same update fixes early Nezarec weak-point registration and an Explicator encounter soft lock. Those are released fixes, not evidence that every failed attempt is a current bug. Released Root of Nightmares fixes.

Conditional Finality Is a Separate Reward Goal

Conditional Finality is associated with the Nezarec reward pool. A completion creates a reward opportunity; it does not make the Exotic an included guaranteed result of the raid-clear service. Community raid reward reference.

Choose the clear objective for the activity you want completed. If your real goal is an Exotic, a Catalyst, a Pattern or a title, read that objective’s separate scope before ordering. A weapon drop, completing its later progress and earning every raid record are different outcomes.

Root of Nightmares FAQ

Roles, reward goals and package scope

What should a first-clear team agree before launch?

Name the goal, assign each mechanic and its backup, and agree directions and planet callouts. Check the live activity card for access and the selected difficulty.

Why can a node chain stop progressing?

A mistimed refresh can disrupt it. Stop independent aura shots, check the current buff and destination, and resume on an agreed runner call.

Can I use one planet numbering system with every group?

Only if the group agrees it. Confirm the room orientation and each position before the attempt so partners do not make incompatible calls.

Is standing near a Refuge field enough?

Confirm the named protection on your HUD before relying on it. The wipe protection also does not remove ordinary attacks or encounter responsibilities.

Is Only Last Boss the same as a full clear?

No. The last-boss choice covers the selected Nezarec encounter; the full-clear package is a separate selection.

Does the raid-clear price guarantee Conditional Finality?

No. The service covers the selected clear objective. A specific random Exotic reward is not included as a guaranteed result.

Can I select Self-play for these Root of Nightmares objectives?

The current configurator supports both Piloted and Self-play for the five goals listed above. Read the final selected total and difficulty before ordering.

Does Master automatically include every Challenge and title record?

No. A difficulty clear is separate from completing named Challenges, optional secrets and the complete title. Check the actual published package scope.
