Nightmare is AION 2's solo boss challenge: you fight named bosses one at a time across four Dream Layers, each boss with ten challenge stages, and every win pays Phantasmal Fragments for the Nightmare shop. This guide explains how entries, stages and rewards work, which bosses are in each layer and what to spend your fragments on first.

How Nightmare works

Each Nightmare boss is a solo fight. When you enter, your buffs are removed, with the exception of the Templar's and Chanter's own protection buffs, so your gear, skills and Stigmas carry the fight. Every boss has 10 challenge stages, and the suggested item level climbs with each one.

Since a Korean update on July 1, 2026, bosses without an unlock condition can be fought straight at stage 10, and clearing a higher stage also pays the first-clear rewards of the lower stages. That makes it worth pushing the highest stage you can clear reliably instead of climbing one stage at a time.

Attempts, resets and Instant Clear

  • 2 free attempts per day, which stack up to 14 if you skip days.
  • An attempt is only used when you win, so a failed try costs nothing but time.
  • Instant Clear Ticket: Nightmare repeats the repeat-clear rewards of a stage you already cleared and uses one attempt. In Korea it can be used from the lobby.
  • Clears earn ranking points based on your time, and rankings are compared within your own class.

Suggested item levels run from about 1,000-1,600 on the Layer I opening bosses up to 4,500-4,950 for Ascended Atheron. Some bosses also have unlock conditions. Which layers are open on global servers right now is not confirmed, so start from the bosses your Nightmare window shows.

Phantasmal Fragments and the Nightmare shop

Phantasmal Fragments are Nightmare's currency. They are bound to you, carry over between seasons and are spent in the Nightmare Exchange, whose tabs cover consumables, growth items, wings, skins and statues. Repeat-clear payouts scale with your class ranking grade, and sources disagree on exact per-clear amounts, so treat any single number you see online with care.

Small amounts of fragments also come from daily attendance rewards and from Abyss bosses in Nahma.

What to buy first

  1. Stigma Shards first: they feed skill growth, which helps every other activity, and they have a per-character limit.
  2. Daevanion Crystals next, for Daevanion progression.
  3. Weekly-limited items such as Soul Codex packs, since unspent weekly limits are lost.
  4. Save for wings only after the growth items are capped: Conqueror and Nightmare wings are long-term fragment sinks.

Tips for higher stages

  • Raise your Combat Power and Gear Score before pushing a new layer; the suggested item level is a real floor in solo fights.
  • Because only wins use attempts, practice a new boss at a stage you can nearly clear.
  • Use your stacked attempts before they reach 14, or you lose the daily refill.
  • Recent Korean patches added boss direction markers, which make positioning easier on the newer bosses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do Nightmare in a party in AION 2?

No. Nightmare is a solo challenge, and most buffs are removed when you enter. Only the Templar's and Chanter's own protection buffs stay active.

How many Nightmare attempts do you get?

You get 2 free attempts per day, and unused attempts stack up to 14. An attempt is only used when you defeat the boss, so failed runs do not cost one.

Do you have to clear stages 1 to 9 first?

Not for bosses without an unlock condition. Since the July 2026 Korean update you can fight them at stage 10 directly, and a higher clear also pays the first-clear rewards of the lower stages.

What are Phantasmal Fragments used for?

They are spent in the Nightmare Exchange on Stigma Shards, Daevanion Crystals, Soul Codex packs, wings, skins and other items. They are bound and carry over between seasons.

Are Nightmare rules the same on global servers?

Not confirmed. Most published details come from the Korean service, and NCSOFT has not released separate global Nightmare notes, so check the in-game window on your server.
