FFXIV Progression Guide: MSQ, Job Leveling & Endgame
Plan your FFXIV return: find your MSQ, level the right job, check duty unlocks and gear, and choose a clear story, raid or coaching goal for your character.
The most useful FFXIV progression plan is the one that fixes your actual next obstacle. Your job level, completed story, duty unlocks and equipment are separate parts of readiness. A returning character can be ahead in one and behind in another. Before starting a long grind, identify what the game is asking you to do next.
Find Your Place in the Main Scenario
The Main Scenario Guide shows your next available story quest and class or job quests. The Duty List links active quests to their journal entries and map objectives. Quest markers also distinguish main story from quests that unlock features or duties. Official screen and quest guide.
When returning, check the quest name and last completed chapter before deciding that your character needs more levels. If the next step is a story prerequisite or an unlock quest, farming experience alone will not complete it. If the step needs a higher job level, choose the job you actually intend to use for that content.
Identify the obstacle before choosing a route
| What you see | What to check | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| The next story quest is unavailable | Earlier quest completion, expansion access and required job level. | Resume the missing story step or meet its stated requirement. |
| Your job is below the needed level | The level of that specific job, not another job on the character. | Level the selected job while keeping its own quests up to date. |
| A duty is missing from your list | Its unlock quest and prerequisite chain. | Find the named unlock rather than buying a clear immediately. |
| A duty lists an equipment restriction | The required average item level and your equipped set. | Prepare suitable gear before planning that run. |
| You can enter but struggle to play | Your actions, role responsibilities and the mechanics causing trouble. | Practise one recurring problem or choose focused coaching. |
Keep Job Progress Separate from Story Progress
For example, Paladin’s Pledge is a level-30 Gladiator quest that rewards Soul of the Paladin and has earlier quest prerequisites. The level requirement is only one part of unlocking the job. Official Paladin quest entry. Use your own class or job quest chain rather than applying this example to every expansion job.
The official Job Guide groups combat jobs into tanks, healers and several DPS roles, with individual pages for their actions. Blue Mage and Beastmaster are identified as limited jobs. Current combat Job Guide.
Start your return with one familiar standard combat job. Revisit the current action descriptions, arrange the abilities you need where you can reach them and practise in manageable content. Do not assume an old hotbar or rotation guide still matches the actions your character has today. More jobs at a high level do not automatically solve a missing story chapter.
Beastmaster arrived in patch 7.56 as a limited job with a level-50 cap. It cannot use Duty Roulettes and several other activities, including Ultimate raids and PvP. Beastmaster’s specific restrictions. It is a separate progression route, not a replacement for a standard combat job when preparing ordinary endgame access.
Use Duty Support and Roulettes for Different Needs
Duty Support lets you enter supported duties with NPC allies. It is available from the Duty menu or an applicable duty entrance; the official manual lists which duties support it. Duty Support instructions and supported duties.
Use it when you want time to follow the story or practise an eligible encounter at your own pace. Check the supported-duty list instead of assuming every trial or raid has an NPC route. You still need the relevant story and entry access; choosing NPC allies does not unlock a duty by itself.
Duty Roulette selects from eligible duties you have unlocked. Its enhanced reward is available once daily per category. Several roulette categories also have average item-level requirements. Official Duty Finder and Roulette guide.
For a leveling session, decide which job is receiving the experience before joining. For a story session, follow the actual quest’s required duty. Repeating a roulette can serve a different purpose from completing a missing MSQ step, so use each activity for the goal it actually advances.
Prepare for Endgame in a Practical Order
- Choose the activity you want to enter and read its current requirements.
- Check your story and named unlock quests before planning a clear.
- Use an appropriate job with its required level, actions and equipment ready.
- Prepare one comfortable activity to rebuild familiarity before moving to harder encounters.
- Check the current reward and currency limits before scheduling repeated farming.
A new level milestone is a useful checkpoint, not proof that every raid is open. Separate being allowed to enter, having suitable gear and knowing how to handle the encounter. For a returning player, a short refresher on one job can be more useful than immediately replacing every piece of equipment or purchasing several unrelated clears.
Patch 7.56 added story after Trail to the Heavens, beginning with A Winter’s Dream. That quest requires a level-100 combat job and completion of Trail to the Heavens. Current post-7.5 story requirements. Check your exact last quest rather than treating a package labeled 7.5 as an automatic promise to finish every later addition.
The same update raised the weekly earning limit for Allagan Tomestones of Mnemonics from 450 to 900, while the storage maximum stayed at 2,000. Updated Mnemonics limits. Your balance, remaining weekly allowance and the amount a service farms are three different numbers. A 450-tomestone package describes the order quantity, not the current weekly cap.
Choose Story, Leveling or Gear as a Defined Goal
Match the service to what is missing
| Goal | Current service scope | Keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Advance the Dawntrail story | A named 7.0–7.5 chapter or the six listed chapters in one package. | Earlier-expansion story and unlisted later additions. |
| Level one combat job | A listed main-job or alt-job range from 1, 80 or 90 to 100. | All jobs, another character, crafting and limited jobs. |
| Earn a currency amount | A stated Tomestone quantity. | A full equipment set or spending the currency for you. |
| Obtain a named gear set | The listed one-job equipment goal. | A raid clear alone or every possible random drop. |
| Complete a raid or trial | The selected named encounter or listed Savage tier. | Unlock quests, leveling and a guaranteed full armor set. |
| Improve your own play | Selected live coaching time while you control your character. | Purchased clears, levels or a guaranteed damage score. |
The MSQ & Job Leveling service separates the story selections from one-job leveling packages. Main and alt routes start at the levels listed in the menu; an alt job is another job on the same character, not an all-jobs order. Have the chosen job unlocked and the necessary expansion access available.
The story choices name Dawntrail 7.0 and chapters through 7.5. Select a later chapter only when its preceding story is complete. The combined choice covers the six chapters it lists; it does not silently add earlier expansions or later quests. These story and job packages are Piloted, with no Self-play choice.
Use Gear & Tomestones for its named currency or equipment goal. The current currency choices include 450 Mnemonics, 2,000 Mathematics or 2,000 Poetics. Currency farming earns the selected amount; it is not a promise to fill a wallet from any starting balance or to purchase a complete set with it. Leave enough space and earning allowance for the chosen amount.
For encounter completion, Savage & Ultimate Raids lists separate four-fight Arcadion Savage tiers and individual Ultimate clears. Extreme & Unreal Trials names its encounter and clear count. Have the selected duty unlocked and your job ready; a clear is different from gearing every slot or guaranteeing a mount drop.
Choose a Routine You Can Maintain
Build a short routine around one main objective: continue a story chapter, level one job or prepare for one duty. Keep optional goals for time you actually want to spend on them. A focused return is easier to follow than a daily checklist containing every roulette, profession, collectible and raid at once.
The Weekly & Raid Bundles service names its activities and weekly cycles. Wondrous Tails, Carnivale targets and Fashion Report judging are distinct from the raid combinations. Multiple weekly cycles cannot become several copies of one weekly reward before its reset, and random journal lines are not a guaranteed rare reward.
If the missing step is confidence or understanding, FFXIV Coaching offers one, two, three, five or ten live hours for one player. You control your character, with participation included in the package. Bring a specific question about your job, a recurring mechanic or the next progression step so the lesson has a useful focus.
Review the FFXIV service catalogue after choosing your next goal. Check the exact chapter, job, encounter or equipment scope and the total in your selected display currency. Supported boosting Self-play adds 20% where the service lists it; coaching already includes your participation, and the story and gear packages remain Piloted.
FFXIV Progression Questions
Choose your next progression step
Does a level-100 job unlock every raid?
No. The selected activity can still need story completion, its own unlock quest and appropriate gear. Check the duty’s entry information.
Should I level another job to fix a missing story quest?
First identify the unmet requirement. A missing earlier quest and a job-level requirement are different obstacles.
Can Duty Support handle every encounter?
No. Check the supported-duty list; it is not a universal NPC option for all trials and raids.
Is 450 Mnemonics the current weekly cap?
No. The reviewed 7.56 update raised the cap to 900. The 450 package is the amount farmed by that order.
Does an alt-job package cover all jobs?
No. It covers one selected combat job on the character within the listed level range.
Does coaching include a raid clear?
No. It supplies the selected live learning time and feedback. Clears and other completion goals are separate services.
