The MW4 camos grind runs in a fixed order: Military camos by weapon level, three Special camos per weapon, then Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break and Divergence before the mastery camos open. Below we walk through every step, the numbers Activision published for launch, and how Prestige and weapon leveling feed into it.

MW4 camo path infographic: 8 Military camos and 3 Special camos per weapon, Gold needs 15 eliminations in one Multiplayer match, Harmonic Break needs Platinum on 33 weapons, Divergence needs 33 Harmonic Breaks, max rank 55 with 10 Prestige levels and Prestige Master to level 1,000.

How the MW4 camo order works

Every weapon in Modern Warfare 4 follows the same ladder. You start with the base camos (Military and Special), finish them all to open Gold, then move up through class-wide and game-wide goals. Nothing above Gold can be skipped, so it helps to know where the slow steps are before you commit to a weapon.

StepWhat opens itFinal challenge (HAN 86 example)
Military camos (8)Weapon levelsLevels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57, 65
Special camos (3)Mode-specific kill challengesKill counts are higher in DMZ
GoldAll Military + Special camos on the weapon15 eliminations in one MP match, or 100 in one DMZ match
PlatinumGold on every weapon in the class (8 for ARs)50 MP headshots or 100 DMZ headshots
Harmonic BreakPlatinum on 33 weapons25 MP double kills or 50 DMZ double kills
Divergence33 Harmonic Break challengesOpens the mastery camos

The final challenge on each step changes by weapon class, so check the challenge text in the Gunsmith before you start. The examples above are the HAN 86 assault rifle, which Activision used in its launch breakdown.

Military and Special camos: weapon XP is the real grind

Military camos have no kill challenges at all. They unlock as the weapon levels up, which means the first part of the grind is pure weapon XP. On the HAN 86 the eighth Military camo arrives at level 65, close to its max level of 72.

Special camos are the first real challenges: three per weapon, each tied to a mode. If you play DMZ, expect the kill requirement to be higher than in Multiplayer. Once you finish a Special camo it goes into a shared pool, so you can use it on other weapons too.

  • Use Double Weapon XP Tokens on long sessions, not short ones, so none of the timer is wasted in menus.
  • Respawn modes with fast spawns (Hardpoint, Domination, Kill Confirmed) give more weapon XP per hour than round-based modes.
  • Level the weapon you plan to take to Gold first; leveling ten weapons halfway gets you no camos.

Gold, Platinum and the class-wide grind

Gold is where most players slow down. After every base camo on the weapon, you need 15 eliminations in a single Multiplayer match (or 100 in one DMZ match on the HAN 86). Small maps help: Shipment arrived on October 27 as a post-launch 6v6 map, and Gunfight-style modes are not a good fit for this one.

Platinum asks for Gold on every weapon in the class. For assault rifles that is 8 Golds at launch, then a class challenge such as 50 headshots. This is the point where the weakest weapon in the class decides how fast you finish, so plan which one you leave for last.

Harmonic Break, Divergence and mastery camos

Harmonic Break needs Platinum on 33 weapons, then its own per-class challenge (double kills for the HAN 86). Divergence needs 33 Harmonic Break challenges. Only after Divergence do the mastery camos open.

DMZRipple TideExfil 2 LT dog tags in one deployment, 50 times

These are long-term goals measured in hundreds of matches. If you only want one prestige camo to show off, the Multiplayer set is the realistic target at launch.

Prestige and weapon prestige in MW4

Player rank goes from Private I to level 55, Commander. After that there are 10 Prestige levels, then Prestige Master from level 56 up to level 1,000, where you reach Prestige Legend.

Each time you prestige you pick a path. Classic resets your unlocks and Create-a-Class for a 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token and extra cosmetics. Regular starts you back at level 1 but keeps everything you have unlocked. If you are mid-camo grind, Regular keeps your classes intact; Classic is for players who want the XP boost and the token.

Weapons have their own prestige. At max level, Weapon Prestige 1 sends the weapon back to level 1 and relocks attachments, except Apex and Blueprint attachments, while your customizations stay. Reach max level again and Weapon Prestige Master starts.

DMZ, daily challenges and cross-progression

DMZ has its own 70-level track. XP you earn in DMZ also counts toward your 1-55 player level, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP does not count toward DMZ. If you play both, finishing DMZ sessions is the better deal for total XP.

Multiplayer has three daily challenges worth 2,500 XP each plus an 8,000 XP bonus for all three, and you can reroll one per day. Warzone daily challenges and Warzone level unlocks start with Season 1.

Ranked Play and Season 1: what is confirmed

Activision's launch posts did not give a date for Ranked Play or for Season 1. The maps and modes post says the Possession and Infected modes arrive around Halloween in the lead-up to Season 1. Some sites report a Season 1 date, but until Activision confirms it on the official blog we treat it as unconfirmed. We will update this guide when it is announced.
